Post 915 Transmission Problem

I helping a friend with a puzzling 915 tranny issue. The car was working perfectly until yesterday when it was dropped off at a shop for detailing. When it was returned 4 hours later the car would not shift into 1st or second. 3rd, 4th, 5th and reverse are all fine. The shop claims nothing happened but obviously something did. Any ideas on where to start looking?
Thanks,
Darrell

Well, it's certainly suspicious, isn't it?
Did the detailer decide to take a little "test drive" after he buffed the wax?

On the other hand, the 915 is a cranky bastard at best. I would check the shift linkage/coupler. Maybe it's come loose, and out of adjustment.

I agree with Dial911, check the Pelican web site for a tech article on shift adjustment. The coupler most likely was somewhat loose, the gorilla detailer managed to attempt a shift without the engine running nor engaging the clutch. it's a simple fix. Remove the cover on top of the tunnel directly between the rear seats, then loosen the coupler slightly , I think it's a 13mm hex. Good luck.

I think the easiest solution would be to get some new friends Darrell.

Exclamation

Hex size depends on the year. 5mm is common also.

hope things work out.

Thumbs up

Thanks to all of your responses and the Pelican Tech Article, we chased the problem to a loose clinch bolt at the shift coupling. Problem solved and with a bit of adjustment shifts as good as ever!
Thanks again,
Darrell

Ahem...Darrell...you can send a case of fine ale to my address as noted below. But watch out, the shipping charges are a bit high
