I am rebuilding my 82 911SC, and would like to get my cams reground. I have heard good things about both the 964 grind and Webcam's 20/21 grind.
Will I have any problems passing California smog with either of these cams? I don't have a problem with leaning it out prior to the test.
Thanks,
Tom

Tom, I would contact Jerry Woods Enterprises, and talk to either Jerry or Rich Walton. They should be able to let you know if it will pass smog or not with them. If I remeber right, Mike Z. from the Pelican board was running 964 cams in his SC before he transplanted the 3.6.

As far as running a 964 grind on a otherwise stock 3.0 engine I have found is less than impressive without a little help. The low end suffers and needs to be supplemented with a bump in CR. That would be the minimum I would do. The throttle response is far better and the cams pick up great midrange and upper power. The CR helps down low. Add SSIs or a set of GHL DOT headers and you are really cooking.

Thanks for the info. I called Elgin, they think I should have no problem with passing smog with 964 cams.
That is the plan Stephen. I already have SSI's, and am planning on 95mm 9.8:1 euro P&C's. The heads are at German Precision now getting a standard 3-angle, and the machine work done for twin plug.
My plan is to just plug the lower holes and run single ignition for now, but if I have pinging problems with California's crappy 91 octane premium gas, add the second ignition setup later.
I am scrounging around for an extra SC distributor for donor for one of Steve Weiner's 964 dist conversions.
Stephen, I don't suppose you have a lightly used Max Moritz P&C set floating around the shop do you?

Stephen,
My currently stock 3.0 is coming out shortly to fix some minor oil leaks and cleanup and while its out I have been contemplating the 964 or 20/21 cams option as well.
The stock exhaust is coming off and being replaced with SSI's and a Dansk sport muffler. Will my low end torque still suffer with the 964's and the updated exhaust? How will the low end (2-3.5k) compare to the stock set up with these options? I'm just trying to get a feel of what to expect when/if the work is done.
Thanks in advance,
-Charlie

Emcon5,
All of the toys you have will help with the lower end for sure. Believe it or not the twin plug will help a bit in the throttle response. It doesn't really help with HP. Actually there is a only about a 5HP increase. It is a great insurance policy though. Sorry no used Ps and Cs around.
Charlie,
In my experience with these types of setups the low end response still suffers. You might consider the 330 grind for standard CR cars. This will not be as meaty as the 964 cam, but will offer some increase to the upper without zapping all of your lower end.
Hope this helps.

Heyyyyy so zombie thread, but I have a 2.7 maybe a 2.9 (supposedly andial but idk), and I have carrera tensioners, B&B headers w magnaflow exhaust, and I picked up a set of new Delta 3 journal 964 cams. The thought was 964 cams + big exhaust = zoom zoom. This was the original plan.
However, I am second guessing the 964 cams for a few reasons:
- read that valve clearance can be an issue unless you have pistons w valve relief cuts, mine do NOT have relief cuts
- Planning on keeping CIS, and I read that overlap can cause idle issues and other side effects.
I do NOT get smogged. Will a 964 cam on a CIS engine even idle at all? What exactly could happen here? Has anyone done it?

might be a topic to post on Pelican, lots of experience sits there if you don't get a response here.
FWIW, my 2.8 is getting a DC60 or 65 cam (I forget which we ordered lol), but the pistons have very deep pockets on them... to spec based on the 10.5:1 compression ratio we are shooting for. It will be EFI, not CIS or Carbs.
I seem to recall a 964 cam would be too aggressive both with clearance and for the CIS.

my 1979SC is getting a rebuild. Doing Euro 9:8:1 compression and webcam 20/21.
Trying to keep it simple yet effective for what it is.
After reviewing many threads here and pelican i decided on the webcam 20/21.
