Question Whirring/Whining-I'm stumped

82 SC
15,000 miles after top end rebuild
SSI,-Dansk 2 in 1 out muffler
J&E pistons 9.6 compression
Chain Tensioner Upgrade and new ramps
Recent Clutch and all other rlated parts, mounts stc

I've been getting this whinning noise from 2800 RPM to 3100 RPM
More noticible with the windows open and the top off.
It happens in all gears and even in nuetral while stopped clutch in or out

I removed the alt belt and the noise has not changed.

Am I missing something or is it normal and I should just forget about it?

Anybody in the Raleigh area have some free to stop over(Or I can drive to your place) and listen to it?

Thanks !

Well I got in touch with a local pelicanite that is very familr with Porsches and he checked it out.
ChainTensiors sounded fine.
He listened for any other unusual noises and everything is fine.

The sound is coming from the exhaust and is propbably just the nature of the Dansk SPort muffler.

I guess I'll just replace the muffler if I get tired of it.

my only other suggestionsn would be that you are hearing engine noise transmitted by the new clutch . I bet you replaced the rubber with the spring centred ( more noise transmitted. )

Thanks Iceman.

We also noticed a slight tinny noise at idle and we are not sure if that's the way the Sports muffler is supposed to sound or if something internal in the muffler gave way. I have not heard another 911 with the Dansk Sports muffler so I have nothing to compare with.

A Stethacope was used and found no unual chain noise or vlave noises.
Sounds similar to a cat shield rattle. High Pitched.

I found an o2sensor shield had come loose and was resting on the cat/surrounding tin. I would never have seen it with the engine in the car. I'm not sure if this is the same thing you mentioned above.

I don't have a Cat installed but I'l take a close look to see if there is any contact with the exhaust.

I got in touch with the oringal owner today and he said the the Sports Muffler usually has a tinny sound and does give of a resonating noise at a certain RPM range.

Maybe I can change the muffler tip.

Is your wife or girlfriend or both in the car when you hear the whining noises?

Hi,

I live in Raleigh. I'm not familiar with the Dansk set up, but I had the same probelm with a B&B. Turned out to be metal rubbing on metal. I replace with Fabspeed. Big difference in sound. I would gladly listen to if you like.
