Whirring/Whining-I'm stumped
#16
I have a Dansk sport muffler on my 86 and there is no sound like the one you describe. It produces a beautiful purring sound. I don't think the sound you hear is muffler related.

Does the whirring noise almost sound like a supercharger or a turbo is kicking in at a certain RPM? I have SSIs and a Monty on my car, and while it does sound mean, it also has a strange noise that is best described as whirring. It is not grinding, rattling, or anything like that...it actually sounds like I added a turbo or something to the car.

It has a nice mellow note below a certain RPM but then whines or resonates until I'm above 3200 RPM. Much more noticible with the windows down.
I'm was thinking that maybe it's the input shaft on the tranny but the noise occurs while in nuestral clutch in or out when the motor is revved. Would the shaft still be turning with the motor even though the clutch is disengaged?

Steve,
Thanks for taking alook at the car today!
I can sleep now since everything sounds OK with the set up I have.
Event had a few nice early 911's and I loved the 924 with the Sebring decal stripes and plaid seat inserts.

Here is a sound/video clip I took of it today.

I revved it up to 3 grand for a few seconds.
I thinking about trimming the exhaust tip with a slight angle cut to see if it changes the sound a bit.

That was great...I needed a good laugh! Especially the "or both" part. LOL!

After listening to the sound clip, it sounds just about like my 84 does. I have been wondering if there was also something I should be looking at. Very interested if you find something as I have heard the sound on some 911's and not on others......hmmm.

I found some links from someone that has a 3.2 with an M&K muffler installed (early design) and it is making the same kind of sound as mine.
