Cool What noise does a clutch make before going?

Recently (and suddenly) there is a "new" noise in the car. Coming from somewhere, as it seems to be under the car sometimes or in the engine on others. Itīll be like a low pitched "run-run" noise, which sometimes cannot be heard. It is more evident with a cold engine, and will completely disappear when you press fully the clutch pedal...

I know my clutch will need to be replaced sometime in the future, but, is this the telltale sound for a clutch going sour? If not, what is it? any ideas?

Cheers

Question

Do you hear this noise, with the clutch engaged, whether you are rolling or not? You don't mention how many miles your car has on it. Clutch ever replaced before? What year is your car? Could be a bearing in your tranny as well. Fresh Swepco 201 in there? Please let us know.

The noise can be heard ONLY when the clutch pedal is NOT pressed, it will disappear when you press the clutch. It is most noticeable when starting from cold, and it will sound either stopped or running.
My car is just over 250000km, and AFAIK the clutch has never been replaced. I have no swepco in my gearbox, as we donīt have it over here (despite all the good things Iīve read about it!).

Thanks!

Hello. I just asked my wrench about this. His first suspicion was of the input shaft bearing, as worn clutch discs usually just "slip" instead of exhibiting unusual noises. I'm sorry,I know this isn't good news. It sounds as though you've had a good, long service life from your existing clutch.

Cool

Thanks for your replies porschephanatic-
Iīm unsure of the location and seriousness of this "input shaft bearing"... is it really a big thing?

I was counting on changing the clutch somewhere along the line... should this make me do it now?

carlitox, No Sir, it's not a big thing, as far as I know, if you have the motor and tranny dropped for a clutch job anyway. My wrench just commented that that was his first thought. We also wondered if you also have a "shudder" when you first pull away from a dead stop. You didn't mention what year your car is, but my best guess is you have a type 915 tranny. Am I right? I would recommend changing gear lube or at least checking the level, if you haven't already. Hope we helped. Cheers!

Time for a clutch job. If you do it soon enough, you may get lucky and get by with just a flywheel resurface, in addition to your other parts. I personally waited too long, and needed a new flywheel, as it was badly grooved and scorched. It was only an extra $189.00 + s/h, though, and we replaced the engine's main seal behind the flywheel while we had everything apart. Good Luck.
