Question 15% Ethanol & CIS

Owners manual states that 10% max ethanol mix should be used.

I read something about congress working on legislation to require 15% Ethanal mixed with gasoline.

The fuel lines and injectors are all fairly new.

Should I worry

Thanks !

Hi:

Currently, all oxygenated fuels contain either 10% Ethanol or 10% MTBE (which is being quickly phased out).

Your confusion might lie in the fact that fuels which are comprised of 85% Ethanol & 15% gasoline (call E85) are marketed in the Midwest and Congress would like to see that swill used all over the country.

Widespread use of E85 will be a virtual windfall for the Auto Repair industry in the US if people use it in cars that were not specifically made for that. Its a potential wallet-buster.

Your CIS is OK with 10% Ethanol, but I'd recommend more frequent filter changes and the use of "Heet" in the gas once in awhile to absorb accumulated moisture.

Thanks !

How often do you reccomend replacement of the fuel filter?

I probably only put about 4,000 miles a year on the car so should I just change it once a year?

Given your 4K annual mileage, once a year is just fine,...

Put some Stabil in the gas whenever the car sits for awhile, too. Run the engine for a bit to circulate that stuff and you'll not have fuel system problems.

Steve,

Should I be worried about 5% ethanol fuel in 84-85 3.2 car? And what is 'Heet'?

Nossir, not at all.

"Heet" is a water-absorbing additive sold here in the US. Its mostly isopropyl alcohol.

You will not need Heet with 15% ethanol, it will solubilize the water in the gas tank just as well as isopropyl alcohol will. The water removers like Heet either use isopropal alcohol, or a mixture of iso. and methanol, or some other alcohol. The idea that ethanol in a gas tank will cause water accumulation and rust is not correct. Gas tank rust is caused by puddles of water in the bottom of the tank. Water accumulates thusly because the gasoline is lighter and "floats" on top of the water. Ethanol, or any short-chain alcohol will pull the water into solution where it will be greatly diluted and removed from the tank with the gasoline as the engine runs.
