Hello and welcome. I bought an 88 Targa and have installed a Wong chip and B&B headers. The 3.2 now has 227 rwhp and I love it. Steve did tell me to add a few gallons of higher octane fuel to the routine 93 octane in hot weather to prevent pinging. ( I live in Houston) I have been told that a cat bypass will give you the same HP increase as the headers and is easier to reverse for emissions testing, but check with other more knowledgeable posters on that score. Will it hurt the engine? Well, as you can tell, there are some strong opinions on this board. My guess is that if you took two engines, one with a stock chip and one with a SW chip and ran a series of durability tests, you might see more wear and tear on the SW chip engine simply because it is asking the engine to do more. But how this translates into your use is difficult to say.

The one thing that can be agreed on, is like Steve Weiner said, the only way to get more HP after a chip and headers, is to start opening up the engine and giving more displacement, hotter cams, etc.

"what your proof is that chips are bad"

Start here!

https://rennlist.com/forums/911-forum/269781-diagnostic-help-broken-rings.html

And those others that have had problems are TOO embarrassed or can't correlate
outcomes with problem sources.

"The 3.2 engine is just basically a little larger 911SC engine with an engine management
system. The max ignition advance for the 911SC is 35 degrees which most/all
SC owners are very concerned about NOT exceeding. Analysis of many 3.2 performance
chips indicates that the ignition advances of these chips are in the low to mid
40 degree range and some as high as 50 degrees."

Some just don't get it and/or are incapable of dealing with data and facts!
So why is it that 911SC owners are very concerned and many 3.2 owners ignore the issue?
Furthermore, why is that the so-called gurus/technical specialists that promote
performance chips also ignore this issue?

"but changes in fuel mapping and ignition mapping CAN improve mid-range throttle response and torque" - Steve Weiner -

Not a correct statement!

Modifying the fuel maps has NO effect because:

1. The Motronic system operates in closed-loop with the O2
sensor for the majority of one's driving conditions except WOT.
2. The Motonic system is set for 12-13.5 AFR at WOT and this
range has little affect on torque, i.e. max torque is AFR=12.6.
3. Without major engine mods, NO additional fuel has ANY
benefit, i.e. the AFR just gets pushed lower without more air
and thus NO increase in torque.
