Default 911SC Steering Bearing

I opened up the steering column yesterday and found that the plastic ring on my steering column bearing was gone (actually it was in tiny pieces inside the shroud). I bought the complete bearing from Pelican (not the metal sleeve "fix-it"), but I am having some problems figuring out the replacement procedure. Should I be inside the smuggler's box disconnecting the universal joints in there, and pushing the sterring shaft up through the dash inorder to get the old bearing out?

Thanks in advance for any help!!!

Dominic

Hi Dominic,

There is another universal behind the gauges where the shaft from the smugglers box needs to change direction to come out of the dash straight.

When I used to work for a living, we had a bearing puller that had three thin fingers with notches in them. The fingers would go into the ball bearing between the inner and outer races and the middle of the puller would have a threaded bolt that pushed on the end of the steering shaft.

Failing that you could undo the top universal joint, the bolt that holds the steering lock to the steering column, the bolt at the back of the steering column (under dash pointing up) and the two bolts that are accessable from behind the gauges(pointing down), and remove the whole thing.

That's what I would do, but you will have to remove the wiper and indicater stalks and the plastic shroud around the column.

I hope this isn't written too confusingly. (is that a word?)

Cheers

Frank

See this. A much easier fix if it will work with your car: http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarti...ng_bushing.htm

Good luck!

Dominic, my guess is that you only need the replacement sleece and not the bearing. I have seen only one bearing failure in 39 years. It's most always the plastic beige colored bushing that goes. Get the replacement metal sleeve and follow the procedures above in Jastx's reply.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the info and the link. I spent my weekend covered in grease and grim. I did the Turbo Tie Rod upgrade, put in new front wheel bearings, rebuilt the calipers and painted them, put on some nice, new. drilled rotors and Ferodo pads, and installed the pop-off valve in the airbox. I wanted to do that steering wheel bearing, but after the grocery list above I was ready to explode when I saw how involved the steering bearing project was going to be, and I was seriously running out of time. I ordered the sleeve from Pelican this morning, and I will be putting that in this coming weekend as well as the shift couplings. I guess there aren't enough hours in the day. Thanks again.
