Question Engine Rebuild Advice Requested

Greetings all,

I am posting this here and on PelicanParts with the hope of some of this groups amazing knowledge.

I have a 1983 911SC Cab. The motor is being pulled out by my mechanic this week for the purpose of a rebuild.

As of right now he is guessing the top end needs a rebuild and nothing more. If the bottom looks good when he has it apart he wants to swap the CIS for PMO carbs.

I have read that the PMOs are great for power and streetability and so I am not too scared by that. What I was thinking was throwing in the 964 cams, however that means keeping the CIS.

I am curious as to what everyone here thinks!

Why can't you use carbs with 964 cams?

If you are going with carbs I would consider even a more aggressive cam. Check with John at www.drcamshafts.com. I had my Carrera cams which is the same as the SC cam reground to his DC22 cam. John would be able to guide you in the selection of the cam. All depends on what you will be using it for. Do a search as John posts here and at Pelican as camgrinder.

I would think that you can go hotter cams with PMO's than you can with the stock CIS. Last look was just over $3K for the carbs and manifold kit. I also would have him do the rod bearings and bolts (ARP) while its apart.. but thats me.

I'd go with carbs, 95mm JE pistons, and an early S cam (I second asking John about the cams) - and fit SSIs. Bespoke JE pistons will allow you to tweek the compression ratio to whatever you want.

The alternative would be something like the 964 cams, keep the CIS but still go with the 95mm JE pistons and the SSIs.

I suspect the first option gives greater power.

I'd look for a low mileage 3.2 and related before sinking a ton of money into cabs and CIS swap.

PMOs will run $3.5K. You may get lucky and find some good used ones, but they are not common.. Used Webbers are aroundfor $2K+/- but you never know exactly what you are getting with used carbs... so you may end up sinking money into them.

A used 3.2 is certainly an option, but it is hard to find good used engines these days it will be $5K+ for a nice one... a 3.6 might be almost as cheap... the 3.6 conversion is pretty much turnkey by now, and REALLY ads HP, if that is what you are looking for.

A full rebuild with custom P&Cs, new cams, PMOs, etc will probably run well over $10K.... but would certainly be a great engine...

Do your engine with carbs, higher comp P/C's and more aggressive cams, like Solex or S. You'll know what you have rather than another 'unknown' used engine.

Wow, good stuff so far.

So, when I spoke to him he was thinking we could avoid cracking the bottom half open. I am not certain, but I think replacing the P's and C's require cracking open the bottom.

The car has the upgraded tensioners, 930 vc's and has headers (no mufflers, or heat exchangers (it really sounds like a race car!) There is NO inspection here in florida (emissions or otherwise).

My goal is too not invest a ton of money as I am not really a cab fan, and I think I will end up with a 997 in two years (ok 3-4). I really just want to start the car and go riding. The car has also had the AC removed (and I am thinking about having one re-installed).

So, basically inexpensive and reliable.

Thanks!!

If you're thinking to dump it in 2 years I'd rebuild it stock. The resale would be higher I think.

DaveE,

I thought that too. That is one of the reasons for my dilemma. I really just wanted to get it running well so I could enjoy it til then. My mechanic gets so excited when he is archtecting the solution you cant help but get caught up in the moment.

His point is that it will sound good, and perform better than what I have now.

The guys on Pelican are suggesting other FI systems.....I have some research to do now, and I actually like that part of this project.

Are there any issues with California smog when going to the 3.6 conversion?

Is there a way to give more air to the CIS system? One of the reasons my mechanic wants to go to PMO's is they flow more air and fuel.

I think I am now leaning away from the PMO's. Blitzsafe looks good, is anyone here running that?

It was recommended on pelican.
