So I am now in a position to buy my first Porsche. Choice was easy (or so I thought) 97 -993 C2, just what I have always wanted and waited so long for.

I have tried over the years to indoctrinate the better half with my passion for all things Porsche but sadly to no avail. That is until we recently visited a local Porsche enthusiast gathering.
Totally out of the blue she says “If you are going to buy one buy one of these”
Next thing I know she is chatting to the owner and sat inside admiring the noise from the flat six.

So the question is do I go with the 993 or find 3.2 Sports Coupe in blue or slate grey or a Targa would be great for summer – she said!

By the way I joined Rennlist over two years ago and regularly read all your posts.

Regards (from over the pond)

Since this is an older car list we will undoubtedly tell you to buy a 3.2 or even a nice SC, these cars have a lot of style and character... :-) But they are all nice machines , it really depends on budget and what your beter half approves of.

I have an 87 3.2.....My borther has a 993....both are great cars but apples and oranges to compare. I suggest you take your better half for a test ride in an early car...there is no comparison in ride quality...Personally I prefer the early cars....but there is a lot to be said for the 993 as well...I for one would not consider a Targa or Cabriolet....but that is me....some people love them...Which ever way you decide to go....get a PPI done by a 3rd party...it has been said many times in many places get the newest car you can afford...although get the most car for your money no matter what body style you decide on.

Thanks for the replies guys - Update

I am hopefully going to see an 87 3,2 next weekend, FSH, 87k. I already know the car and it is
absolutely stunning. Still, I will rule with head not heart (difficult!) and PPI before making any
deep pocket decisions.
I have seen a number in the past which do not live up to description and part history not full but know this one will be "right on the nose" - I will keep you up to speed.
Thanks Again - Digger

The problem is, Digger, you're already in love with the 3,2..., unless the PPI guy paints a really negative picture, the car is yours, already. Enjoy it and have fun!

If a 993 is waht you have always wanted then buy a 993! At LEAST, as others have said, DRIVE a 993 and an earlier model (you have skipped right over the 964, which is a great car and midway betweem the 993 and the 3.2 in comfort and feel). Don't get all wrapped up in the moment and impulse buy something just because it's there..

I have a '85 3.2 and even I would take the 993! As much fun as the 3.2 is, I think the 993 is the best Porsche 911 ever made (that statement will get me kicked off this board). If you can afford a 993 I would go with that. If you really can afford it get her a early 911 Targa. Have the best of both worlds. - Jay

Guy's thanks for the advice:
To explain my current situation, with all honesty I have looked at and driven 3.2, 964 and 993. overall the 993 was/is a fantastic car. the 964 was a great drive, but for sheer enjoyment, thrill and personal choice for me the 3.2 wins. Trust me I am not prone to heart first decisions and will not make a rash decision I just love everything that the 3.2 is. Sad but true.

I don't think you can go wrong with either one. Really depends on what you are looking for. I bought a 993 in December and absolutely love it. I wanted a low mileage air cooled car that could do daily driver duty if necessary, DE work, and a couple road trips per year. I thought the 993 met my needs best for that combo. That said, I saw a beautiful black SC yesterday and I had to stop and look it all over. I'm pretty sure I'll put one in the garage next to the 993 once I'm done with a few mods. They are to me the most classic of the 911s and there is nothing that compares to a good one. Good luck with your decision.
