I'm having quite a bit of trouble with my 915 'box at the moment. I drove it one morning with no troubles at all, no crunching, baulking/stiffness (never had these problems) as smooth as ever.
However, on the return journey a few hours later, I lost 2nd, 4th and Reverse gear, it also got stuck in 1st but I managed to force it out and 1st 3rd and 5th seem to work OK.
Got Home, and suspected the linkage, checked, readjusted and replaced the bushes - still no joy.
I have tried to shift the box on the coupler but it is jammed solid on 2nd, 4th and Reverse - no crunching, grinding - just jammed up solid.
As I said previously, the 'box has performed faultlessly before this apart from 1 or 2 instances where bad/stiff selection has occurred - I put this down to cold oil.
Does anybody have any ideas on what has gone wrong as all the selection has been lost on the lower gate.
Hi Wayne: I've never seen your exact symptom, but it must be linkage. Internally 2, 4 & R have their own selectors, they don't share mechanical bits (1/2 share, 3/4 share, and R is with 5). Kneel down outside your driver's door, slide the driver's seat all the way back, and lean into your normal knee space head first. Sight on something vertical, and line up the bottom few inches of the shift lever with it (with the shifter in neutral). I think that you will find that the lever, where it protrudes from the shift tower, is leaning quite a distance from vertical. The cause would be that the tunnel rod has moved in relation to the coupler under the rear access panel. Look, using a good light, at the front part of the coupler (splined shaft) where the compression clamp with the bolt is located. You might even see a mark on the splined rod where the tunnel rod used to be. Good luck with it!

On the way to my local specialist on Saturday Morning (with only 1st and 3rd!!) I took a right hand corner and "thunk" the selector loosened up and I had all gears again - however, 4th was grinding quite bad.
I decided to leave it with the specialists for them to diagnose - it appears on pulling the box that all the gears themselves are fine (almost like new it was described), the synchro's, synchro rings and sliding sleeves however are damaged badly and will need replacing on nearly all gears.
While its down, I am also replacing clutch, front and rear oil seals, returning to OEM shifter (this has been blamed for the damage - a bit of a hash to be honest by previous owner)
I am currently smarting at the £2000+ UKP bill I face!!!!!!!
Once I come to terms with this, I will realise that this is a small price to pay for such a great car (I hope!!!! )
If anybody can think of any other work that could be done while engine is out, then please feel free to add
Ouch! I should have considered an aftermarket shifter, but didn't because my shop didn't care for more than a handful. We gave some people such a bad time they had us go back to o.e. parts before they broke something! If it's been an unknown time, and you have CIS, make sure you look at the oil pressure switch, thermostat o-ring and throttle lever bushings (all items on the top of the engine but hard to get to). Aesthetically you might want to do a new engine compartment pad. For your own enjoyment make sure that if a synchro ring in replaced its sliding sleeve is also replaced! Best of luck with the project.
