Post 88 Cabrio power top problems

When I open the power top, the passenger side lockdown motor runs and the driver side lockdown motor will not run until the other one is finished, same problem when closing the top. I replaced the power top switch thinking that the switch couldn't handle the current load, but the problem was not fixed. Any suggestions?

You may have a problem in the cab top control unit
or the switches in one of the locking motors.
The cab top system is very problematic & difficult
to trouble-shoot.

Good luck

I have had that problem and more. Solution - replace the control module with one from a 993. You'll need an adaptor (avaialable from P-dealers) and then you can simply pull over, pull on the handbrake and operate your top with the engine running - thats right no more turning off the engine and draining the battery first.

This is a recommended upgrade from Porsche as the old control modules are NLA I've been told.

Cheers
Mark

They fail just like the 964 ones. Plus, you need
to "pull" a new wire to the updated unit.

Don't replace the unit until it really needs
replacement. Don't waste money.

Good luck

Correction! If you don't have a 964, you may
have to "pull" two wires, i.e. the oil pressure
switch and the handle brake switch.

Good luck

Thanks for the input, It's up for sale right now and I'll let the potential new owner know the solution to the problem.

A few wires and 15 minutes later voila, no more problems with opening and closing and I can keep the engine running!

OH yeah... and it cost me all of US$125 which for this fix was pretty acceptable IMO.
