Default Carrera 3.0 whaletail pros and cons

I have a '77 Carrera 3.0 Targa in original metallic silver with the early black rubber whaletail. It is a bit faded and I would like opinions on whether I should keep it and how to recondition it, does it affect the handling without it?

I think it spoils the lines of the car but if it was an original feature I may keep it (being a purist!)

If I were to remove it would I need a new engine cover or could I just fit a grill in the existing one.

This is my first post so sorry if I am rambling!

I will put a picture on in morning, I assume it is a factory one, the car has the chin spoiler and the tail is a one piece rubber affair

The p/u tail is heavy weighing ~20#, the weight in the back does noticeably affect the dynamics of the car. I replaced mine w/ a MA Shaw RSA tail which weighs ~9#s

original p/u on my C3

I thought about putting one on my SC. Then I thought, why would I want an aerodynamic aid made from rubber that is some 20+ years old. I say take it off and preserve for rarity/originality, but put another tail on in its place.

Bill

Your car has been set as the background on my pc to give me something to aim for - the wheels are superb, what are they and what splitter/ spoiler have you put on. I think I am about to fall out with my bank manager - your car is the same colour as mine so it makes it easier to visualise.

Cheers

Damien

Thanks, I've been working on it for 3 decades now. The wheels are Kinesis K5 8 & 9.5 x17 w/ powder painted centers, The f/r bumpers are RUF CTR bumper caps.

They are a bit hefty those whale tails.

One of the ugliest tails out of Zuffenhausen. I recall when they did this originally and thought, "what are they thinking?" Move on to what looks good to you. Save it if you must!

Sorry,
I just dont like it.
Targa's are a tough call anyway but I dont like the bumpers or the wheels.
going from one rubber wing to another doesnt make the slightest difference to me.

as long as you like it, then its fine, but thats my 2p.
