Nikasil liners have a machined cross hatch pattern; Alusil will appear to be a consistent gray finish. These finishes appear on the inner diameter where the piston rings make contact.

Thanks Peter. It appears that I have Alusil ones (Bummer) they seem OK tho. Whats your thought on rebuilding. I know I cant do much with these cylinders. What is the school of thought on reusing them as is? And if they are reused should I rering the pistons. I've read not to pulll the pistons out of the cylinders. HELP!!!!
Thanks again.

Alusil cylinders are made with the same Reynolds 390 aluminum used in the 928/944 cylinders.
Also used by Mercedes in their V-8. There is a process for refinishing the bores, find a machine shop that has the right equipment & know-how to do this. Before you spend money on that, check your pistons for top ring groove wear. If the pistons are worn beyond spec, either buy new p&c's or don't
re-ring or refinsh the old p&c's - just re-install as is - if you had good compression/oil consumption before the tear-down. If not - buy new p&c's, period.
