Pure driving pleasure and the rush of adrenalin I get even just from the smell of the leather as I brush past the car in garage.

Also I just took my 3 year old for a bit of a night drive to check my throttle linkage (see "Full Throttle?" post) and notched up yet another happiest-day-of-my-life experience, a time we would never have shared in my wife's Toyota! He brought along his matchbox GT3RS and said that when he is old enough he wants to race Porsche's too. I did not have the heart to tell him that we were not actually out there racing.

I have never walked by or pulled up next to a porsche that I did not double take on. They are beautiful cars. I have always wanted one since a kid despite my father being a Cadillac man. My 3.2 is everything I had thought it would. I guess the main reason I love it because it has been a fantacy realized. Can a Subaru STI beat me in a race? Yes, but I don't care. I have a Porsche!

the sound, smell, the handling (both good and bad traits) no power steering, no traction control, no yaw control, no park distance control, no lane speed control, no cupholders, crappy a/c, poor heat control, ignition on the wrong side, engine in the wrong place, engine cooled by the wrong stuff, plus, it's purty.

For one; It is like a living thing.
On a good long run, like after an hour or so you can feel as if the car is smiling....sounds trippy but I get that vibe from my 3.2!

I'm sure the good folks at Stuttgart would love to be able to distill whatever it is that makes a 911 so special. They keep designing and building "better" vehicles that fail to attract the same following...

Wink Time to break into song...

After hearing the Del McCoury Band live sing "52 Vincent Black Lightning" I decided I needed to write a corny country song about my car. Mr. b40 Hucker has already seen this. God, the car even makes me willing to admit I wrote this...

What does it take for a man to have a life?
The most important thing’s a good God-fearing wife.
A place on the Earth to hunt and fish and garden too,
A good lovin’ family and good friends true.

What else brings joy this side of heaven?
For me it’s a Porsche ’87 911
There are trucks to haul your loads and many cars you can arrive in
But the Porsche 911 was designed just for drivin’

Was it being born German in the Motor City
Gave me love at first sight for the Porsche so pretty?
I promised to myself that I’d have one some day
And today like Sinatra, I’m drivin’ it my way

Imagine being one with the highway so sweet
A fire-breathing dragon behind your back seat
You can’t mistake the feeling for any other thing
When you rev it up to redline you’re the King of Everything

The warrior wakes up from a cave in your soul
Your little inner boy comes out of his hole
They strap themselves in with big, wide smiles
Hungry and begging for miles, more miles

If you get the itch to see what I’m talkin’ about
I’ll pick you up tomorrow and we’ll roustabout
The only thing that takes a little lead from my pedal
Is that ticket from the man with the heavy metal

So when the day comes and I’m bound for heaven
Don’t bury me in my Porsche 911
Take her for a spin, rev her up to redline
And cast my ashes over Highway Number 9

Hopefully at the gates of heaven
I’ll see St. Peter in a Porsche 911
He’ll say would you like an eternity of this?
And I’ll spend forever driving my bliss…

Cheaper than a wife.

Better engineered than any other automobile.

For a semi-exotic, you can actually DRIVE it coast to coast without worrying about a breakdown.

Default Why I love my 911

I got a kick out of the previous post, "because my mom drove me to Kindergarden in it" In my case, I was driven just about everywhere in my mom's 911. Between the late 70's and late 80's we had a targa and a 25th Anniversary cab. She now drive the twin turbo Audi S4 (which is truely a rocketship) but has a Boxter in the garage. While my mom was driving a the 911, my dad was driving a Jeep Grand Wagoneer (with the fake wood sides). Quite the pair of cars. I think his Porsche days ended at the midpoint of a curve in Minnetonka, MN when he flipped his 911 coupe into a swamp. But enough about my folks.

I like my 1987 Carrara Cab because its like driving a go-cart to work every day. I often study the lines on other manufacturers cars and have never seen any design that even approaches the complex, compound curves found in the rear quarter panels of a 911. I also love the headlight cowlings.

The best looking curve I found on a car since in the indent on the side of the 2004 Volvo's the XC's. As much as I wish they would keep that asa design element, it looks like they are softening that curve on subsequent models.

There are a lot of things I'm currently frustrated about but after all, its going on 19 years now and its in damn fine shape.
