Default Is it an Air Pump?

I notice on Calif. cars (apparently) there is this thing on the left hand side of the motor that has a belt going to it.. what is it and can it be removed if you are in a non emissions State?

If it can be removed, any downside? upside? I just think if it's not neccessary it would clean up that engine bay pretty decently..

Good question. My 78 SC due to arrive from CA next week has the same setup.

Yes, it is a secondary air pump. Many do remove it. I'm not sure what the typical procedure is, however. Do you remove just the pump and the hose to the check valve (located just below the pump)? The check valve will keep the exhaust from leaking. Or do you remove the entire system and find suitable plugs for the ports in the exhaust pipes?

I haven't messed with mine.

There are air injection plugs that you put in the bottom of the heads. They are little allen plugs. They are 6 Ea.
