Default A/C motor Problems - '80 SC

When I turn on the fan switch on the console, the compressor engages, but the fan does not blow. It appears that the fan for the cabin a/c is located in the front trunk under the access hatch. I verified the leads there were getting 12 volts when the fan switch was on, so my motor must be frozen up. It is so tight in there and I am surprised the motor is not more accessible, esp since it looks to be on top of the evap. How do I remove it? I don't want to undo the evap lines, but it does not look like I can move the unit much without taking this whole thing apart. Can the top cover be taken off with the evap and lines in situ?

Thanks

Much more likely the commutator brushes have worn out but that news doesn't alleviate the access issue, sorry.

Frozen up would be likely to blow fuses.

Your right - it probably would blow fuses. I need to remove the motor to see what the problem actually is, and I cannot get my hands or a tool in there to even check that the motor spins. If it needs to be replaced, I have to get it out of that housing anyway, which is the problem I am having.

I think you have to evacuate the system, crack the lines (then seal ends--cleanliness is everything) and remove the whole Evap/Blower ***'y from the smuggler's trunk. PITA for sure.

The good news is, they last a very long time once replaced.

Thanks - I cracked the lines and cannot remove the unit. It is loose, but something under it seems to be preventing it from being lifted out. The little drain tube is not the problem. Anyway, I appreciate the advice. I might have to bust it out and just replace the whole thing. The motor is shot anyway, so perhaps a used evap and blower plus housing is in order.

Very common for the evaporator fan motor to fail, however usually you will hear some squealing beforehand. What you could do to test the circuit is run 12v directly to motor to verify if the supporting circuit is not the problem.

To remove the evap box:
removing the lines (after evacuatiing system) to the evaporator low side outlet and the expansion valve inlet

unlplug the wire harness to the fan

carefully pull out the thermostatic sensor tube (alum. in white cover) from the evap. core, be careful
not to bend or kink the alum. tube else the system won't operate

loosen the evap air outlet hose clamps

remove the front and rear evap box brackets

carefully tilt the unit toward the LH fender and lift up, yes the condensation drain on the bottom
of the evap box will hang up in the hole, then tilt slightly toward front bumper and lift out,
if it continues to give you problems, carefully slide off the four metal clips that secure the top and bottom section of the box, if they fall down in the smug's well don't worry you can retrieve them later, once you get the top off you can pull out the evap from the bottom section and then pull out the bottom, going in is easier, after you do it once you'll be a pro

I just removed the contents of my smugglers box. When the A/C was in, the fan worked like a charm. I would be willing to part with the entire evaporator unit...cheap. However, it is from a 1980 so its 26 years old. Send me a private message.
