Default Trailer hitch

Well while I'm asking silly questions how bout this one. Is it possible to put a trailer hitch for a little utility trailer on a 911. I have one on my miata, good for taking tires and jacks to the track. Also the occasional trip to Lowes gets a whole lot more fun if you're doing 6 wheel drifts enroute..

I've seen one or two in the NYC area. Even crawled under to look how they were installed. Sadly I took no pics. (this was on a '74-'89 vintage). I beleive the 996 folks have an esier way (different bumper). Not sure on a 964.

I don't remember seeing "towing capacity" listed in the owner's manual. I know the bumpers on my SC are real thick aluminum that could probably handle hitch hardware. What would look really good is you got a matching set of rims on the trailer to match your car's wheels.

Hi redstack,

I know for a fact that a couple of folks have done it on their 993s. And I recall seeing someone post in the Racing/DE forum for their 911, IIRC. Do a search on both boards and I think you'll come up with some answers.

I put a hitch on my SC. After doing a lot of research and asking a lot of questions, all I did was find a bumper-mount 1.25" receiver and bolt it to the face of the bumper behind the license plate (then remounted the license plate on the receiver). I did put about a 3"x6" 1/8 steel plate behind the bumper at the receiver, but I think in retrospect that fender washers on the 4 mounting bolts would have worked equally well.

Did it work, you ask? Well, our PCA region owns a 5x8 enclosed cargo trailer used to haul pylons, easy-up tents, timing gear, a BBQ, a generator, and some spare helmets to autocross. Occasionally it also had a set of tires or two thrown in for good measure. It weighed over 800 lbs empty and probably 1300-1500 lbs loaded. I was always careful to balance the weight in the trailer so as not to end up with too much tongue weight, and was cautious to load in a manner that minimized potential weight shifts when driving, but I pulled that trailer several hundred miles over the last couple of years without incident. I've gotten some funny looks, but never a had problem.

I have a hitch on my 87 for towing a tire trailer (and other crap) to the track. I have a steel plate with 5 nuts welded to it bolted to the back of the bumper, and 5 holes drilled in the bumper behind the licence plate. The hitch just bolts to the plate. I take it off at the track and when I'm not using the trailer. The licence plate covers the holes. Several of my buddies do the same thing, and none of us have had and problems. My trailer probably weights 500lbs when loaded, and I've never had an issue.

I posted a couple of pics if the hitch on and off in this thread: https://rennlist.com/forums/showthre...=trailer+hitch

If you're interested, I've got a receiver & hitch setup for an SC/Carrera, complete with a bumper cut with hole- pretty much like Sjanes' setup. BTW- this came from Mike Z (search the 914 forums for background). Feel free to PM or email me at aeshultz@earthlink.net .

Default trailer hitch

I’m currently pondering the options for installation of a trailer hitch on my ’80 SC. Since I had the muffler and bumper off for the chain tensioner upgrade (done - successful!), I decided it was a good time to see what is involved in setting the car up to tow a track trailer. While it’s encouraging to see that people have had success just bolting a hitch to the bumper, I have my doubts after looking at the bumper and the compression struts. The bumper itself is pretty stout (¼ in thick aluminum) and the struts look fairly strong as well. My concern is with the four bolts that hold the bumper to the struts – they don’t look like they’re up to the job. What I’m thinking about is some sort of structure (probably just two pieces of 1 in square tubing – maybe aluminum) that ties the struts to a plate inside the bumper behind the license plate. The hitch itself would then bolt through the bumper into nuts welded to the back of the plate inside the bumper. It’s easier for me to visualize than it is to describe.

BHMSC;
That's pretty much the setup - hitch "bar" side-to-side tied into the bumper struts - then receiver pokes out through the bumper.
