Dave:
I think the best course of action would be to pick up a decklid from a 964. Since the hinges don't line up, you will have to make some sort of modification. Jack Olsen had one on his early car. The decklid dimensions on his car and your are the same, so he would be the one to ask how to make it fit.

I believe the tail size/opening in the 964 lid is larger than the grill opening in the 88 Carrera rear lid, although the overall outside lid dimensions are the same .

A 993 decklid will not work. It's a different size.
A 964 lid is the same size, and will work just fine.
Here are the salient points of this transplant:
You need the spoiler and the decklid together. You can't put the new spoiler on/into your old decklid.
The hinge spacing on the 964 decklids was moved one inch further apart to accomodate the retractable spoiler. The smartest way to accomodate this is to modify a pair of 964 hinges (it can also be done with the earlier hinges.) You can either cut and re-weld the hinges, or use spacers at the mounting points. I think some guys have simply bent them.
You can control the retractable spoiler with a power window switch and a load-sensing circuit (for one-touch operation). Email me if you need the wiring diagram for this.
If you have AC with a condenser under your current grill, it will not fit under the 964 lid. You need to either get a 964 fender-mounted condenser or (better yet) get the Scott Industry under-the-belly-pan condenser. (A side benefit of the latter is actually-working AC.)
Your car will look cool with the new spoiler, and you will raise it menacingly at stoplights before you punk lesser cars.
