Talking My first 911 - Carrera 1984

Hi guys,

I've been lurking for quite some while on this message board and I've finally decided to go on an purchase my first 911 but I would need some advice from you.

Carrera 1985 - Targa top
1- 160 000 Miles
2- Interior and exterior are very clean
3- Seals have been replaced but it looks like there's still one leak.
4- A/C is dead and wasn't converted
5- Brakes will need to be redone (all 4)
6- Synchro will need to be replaces (first and second gear are hard to pass unless at the right RPM)
7- He claims that the compression is at 170 (which is good I think)
8- Tires are new

He's asking 25K$ CAD (canadian dollar) I wish to propose a counter offer as I think this price is a bit high for a 160K miles car. What do you suggest?

How much can I expect to have to pay for the synchro job and the break job?

Thanks!

Yvan

For a car with that high of mileage, and at least $2-3K of problems... Id say run fast. That car is worth about $12K US

As a reference point, I just bought an 84 Targa in Los Angeles with 94K miles for $13K (US) needed a/c charge and a few light bulbs and was missing the tools and jack. It had a recent paint job and all new rubber. No leaks, no other significant problems, and absolutely no rust.

I paid $12,000 (vs. $14,900 asking) for my flawless 200,000 mile 84 3.2.. It came with a stack or repair bills (his, not mine!) of over $12,000 in 2 years. I had put $0 into it since buying it in April 2002,

Estimated cost of addressing the problems with your car:
A/C - around $1500 to convert to r134
Brakes - $1600 or more if the rotors and calipers are shot
Syncros - $1000-2000 or more
Oil leak: priceless....

Pass on that car unless you can get him down to US$10000 or less.

Yvan... one thing that may help you guage things...is go to:

<a href="http://www.autotrader.com" target="_blank">www.autotrader.com</a>

and

<a href="http://www.cars.com" target="_blank">www.cars.com</a>

Do a search on the model years that you are interested in. You will see all kinds of 911s from all over the US from which to guage an assessment of value. Perhaps they have a Canadian site too.

I got an '82SC with 124K miles, overall VERY excellent condition and clean, new tranny, new BB TriFlo stainless exhaust, hydraulic tensioners, all repair bills (over 15K in ten years), Sanden A/C, always garaged, no snow or rain and clean prepurchase inspection..for $12,500 American. Keep looking Yvan.
