RJT,

Thanks much for the kind words. These take a special meaning coming from someone who owns (and has owned) some really awesome Porsches; amongst them, Bad Max comes to mind very quickly and its still on my list of must haves. That car got me thinking of building both an outlaw 356 and also a 911….

Anyhow, my yellow car is an original 1969 911S which has gone through a complete transformation into a 2 liter Vintage legal race car (HSR, CHRA, …).

Body restoration and paint was performed by (Greg) Michaelian Restoration in Stuart Florida with graphics by artist Dave Schnorr on an inspiration from the psychedelic 917’s and ST’s from the 70’s. I picked the colors (with the wife’s help ) with the main objective being that it would look period correct but still retain the “overgrown” Hot Wheels© look. All mechanical, setup, roll cage, electrical, suspension, …. (except for the original engine) work was performed by Jack and Brady Refening’s 901 Shop.

Current engine built by Gulf Performance in Pompano Beach Florida machine work done by Ollies and The 901 Shop. Engine is an honest 2 liter (1991cc) running very high compression with custom Cosworth pistons, custom 906 derived cams, titanium valve train, Pauter rods, knife edged crank, boat tailed case, 965 oil pump, all moods to the original magnesium case (more on that later), tin plugged heads with electromotive, PMO 46’s, …… Approx HP figures in the 220’s running 110 octanes.

Tranny is a custom geared 901 with a GT ZF type lsd, lightweight flywheel and clutch package. Suspension runs custom (and very thick) sways and torsions with custom re-valved RSR Bilsteins. Brakes are stock 69 S alloy units running pagid race compound pads and a large master cylinder. Wheels are deep six fronts and seven rears restored by Al Reed and powder coated silver (backgrounds) and clear (petals and rim).

Some body parts were changed to fiberglass equivalents (not carbon in case a repair is needed) to resemble the “911R’’ albeit on a long wheel base car. A custom roll cage and dash complete the interior. The shop also made a custom wiring harness with resetable breakers (instead of fuses) to enhance safety and ensure trouble free operation. Total weight is between 1800 and 1900 lbs !

Now back to the engine, it recently blew up during a race due to oil starvation (cause yet to be determined) and we are coming back with a stronger one now. New engine is being built by the 901 Shop (Stuart Florida) and will have an early aluminum case (901/01), higher compression, the electromotive will be replaced with a distributor with twin msd boxes. HP figures should be in the 240’s running 110 octane.

I’m the weakest link on the equation but boy, do I have fun trying …………

Check my post on upcoming vintage events on the racing forum for some interesting new events.

Cheers, Juan

Jack,
A bit of a ding there, Looked like all four wheels locked up from the get go ;o)
Id have floored it and flicked the back around, averting disaster and opposite locking my way back around the corner on full power with those massive rears putting down big rubber streaks.

or maybe not.

I guess it's a sign of the times. But, until I saw this thread, I never really put the SCs and Carreras as "early" 911s. For the longest time, owners of the SCs and Carreras seemed to consider their cars as the "modern" car compared to those like my '73. Funny how time keeps marching and changing everything. Well, to all you SC and Carrera owners, WECOME TO THE EARLY 911 CLUB!!

I'm with you Jay, although I don't really see the SCs and Carreras as "modern" cars, just the pinnacle of the old world theme. I think the 964 (with coil suspension, ABS, "proper" AC, etc.) is the beginning of what I'd call "modern" 911s.

As I noted on the first page:

""Early Cars" are '73 and earlier 911s. "Mid Year" cars are '74-'77. "SCs" have their own identity ('78-'83), as do the "3.2 Carreras" ('84-'89). Then the modern cars begin..."

Not that I'm complaining about "non-early" cars posting here!

i agree. definition of an early 9 series (911 or 912) is pre 73, ith long hoods and horn grills. pre impact bumper.

thats not to say the post 74 ones arent cool though, cause they do kick ***.

Given that a '74 is 31 years old at this point, and the Carreras are around 2 decades old, I'm going to have to go on record as saying that they may in fact qualify as an "early" 911. I think that's fair. I guess we are redefined as a long nose or long hood 911. But, heck, it seems even the '74 through Carreras are becoming long noses too! :-)

Here's a question: if you "backdate" an SC or Carrera, then go to...say, the Taj Kruezers car show, should you be grouped with the "early" cars or with the Carreras? ...or even further, if you "backdate" a 964, where should you be placed? It would be kinda funny looking to see all the 964s, then one lone "early car" stuck in the group!
