Default What is this??

This is probably going to be a dumb question, but what the heck, it's been driving me crazy so I ask anyway...

1989 Carrera 3.2.
When cleaning the inside of my right rear fender (took out nearly 4 pounds of mud, sand and dirt...), I stumbled onto a black "pump-ish" item which is installed inside the rear fender, right behind the door plate. It is black plastic, and has the brand "Purolator" on it, and three hose entries for respectively "Tank", "Motor" and "Luft" (Air).

I'm guessing it's a pump of some sort, but which one? The fuel pump is located in front of the car (I think) and it's not a filter, because I do know where the air, fuel and oil filters are...

I checked the Bentley manual and 101 Projects, but can't find a clue. So... help...

I believe it's the Carbon Canister.

Carbon Cannister. It's right above the thermostat for the oil lines.

Thanks PC2 and Spider911.

Can you explain to a mechanical greenhorn what it does?

It allows gas fumes to be absorbed by the carbon in the cannister so you don't get the crappy gas smell. It does more, but that is all I can think of right now.

Thanks, Spider911.

Just did a search on the Rennlist forum and found some more info. It all boils down to what you just posted.
