Default The 911 engine - how does it work?

I am looking for a book that describes in detail how the air cooled engine works. In an ideal circumstance, the book would include pictures / cut-aways describing each piece and how the parts make up the whole. Any recommendations? Does this exist?

JoeBingo,

Two fine books on the subject are Bruce Anderson's "Porsche 911 Performance Handbook" and Wayne R. Dempsey's "How to Rebuild & Modify Porsche 911 Engines". Paul Frere's "The Porsche 911 Story" also has much design & development info about the engine as well as (of course) the remainder of the car.

All should be readily available at any full service book store or via the net.

I wish I could find an SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) catalog. They have a ton of neat 'general' papers & such. There might be a title like "Air Cooled Engine Design Theory and Application" that has stuff like formulas to compute adequate cooling fin surface area for given cylinder/piston sizes. That would be getting PRETTY deep though, IMHO!
Happy reading!

Your question isn't clear - it works just like other IC piston Otto cycle engines, except it is cooled by air. Also, it is a boxer cylinder arrangement, but so are some water cooled engines. So is it the air cooling you are interested in? Or something else? And how advanced....

Barry - Thanks. I'll look into each publication and go from there.

Randy, I guess I'm not really sure what my question is either, other than I don't know as much as I'd like to know about the mechanical parts of the cars. After I do some of the earlier recommended reading, maybe I'll be able to ask more intelligent questions. Thanks for the reply

For a cool moving 911 engine, go to the 1st post in this Pelican post . Right click & save as . . . Darryl posted a bunch of these.

You might post what you do know and let folks take it from there.

Two suggestions:
Frere's 911 Story - covers the whole car and its technical development and racing history

and something from a general library about how cars work or how engines work... browse and find something that looks about right... diagrams are good.

After that Philip Smith has some books you can read and you can then move on to Race Car Vehicle Dynamics, which does not cover engines.
