993 vs 911 (87-88)
Hi guys, I've been lurking for awhile.
I'll be ready to take the plunge in a couple of months to buy either a 993 or 88-89 911. My last porsche was a 944 88Turbo - guards red..clean as the board of health. I sold it in 95 for 13k...should of kept it..oh well. Had zero problems with it .
Anyway my question is how does the upkeep of the 88-89 compare to a 993? Especially when it comes to engine rebuilding. It seems like the 993 have to have there engine rebuilt at 75k.
Thanks for you input.

I'd include the 1987 911 in your search if you are interested in G50 equipped Carrera's. The '87's are essentially identical except for some clutch parts that were updated with the '88's and '89's.
The G-50 Carreras and the 993's were both very good series of 911's. They are all built very well with high quality components to tight tolerances. The 993's are newer, so logic would tell you that they should be a bit less to maintain, but these are all getting to be old 911's.
The 993 and the G-50 cars drive very different. You need to drive examples of both to see what you like and what you want out of a 911.

Spot On Jay!
Hey Trinitony!
Jay is spot on!! The best advice is to drive both cars - they are very different beasts! I drive an '86 911 and my father drives a '96 C4 993. Horsepower is up significantly on the 993 - however so is the overall weight. Both are fun with the 993 being a bit more refined. All older cars are going to need maintenance and the 75K rebuild would probably depend on the car and how it was used and maintained - I wouldn't use that as a blanket statement. You should be able to find some real nice 993's w/ much lower mileage than that! Good luck on your search!! Jay - too bad the weather has gone bad...... no more fun until spring.....

Hoover,
Yes, the door has slammed shut on Fall and we're definitely into winter... The salt is out, so no more fun!
I'm working on my 37th winter and still can't get used to it...

I have owned both. They are virtually a decade apart (obviously) so you should expect vast technology differences. IMO they will be impossible to compare. If I had to decide I would use the following criteria: 1st - could I afford a 993 vs a 911; and 2nd - would I enjoy an older (not quite vintage) 911 more than a more modern 911.
With that said, I want to purchase an additional 911 to my 993. I can afford a 964, 996, and even a 997. My choice is a 87-89 911.... a classic.

I actually test drove a blue one just like yours ..an 86 a year ago in Baltimore. Car was in good condition, but just something about it kept me from buying it. I think at the time I kept comparing the shifting to my 944T.

apples and oranges.............................this has been covered before
take the 993 if you want a more refined version of the "911"
Take the Carrera if you want the last of the best of the original "911"
each has their own issues, the common being valve guides, so get a PPI
A 993 is the pinicle of the aircooled 911, IMO anyway, but handles fantastic and is an excellent car overall
a Carrera is an excellent car overall too, drive both, you won't be disapointed with either choice
