You definitely can't goe fast in a 3.2 unless shifting at 4-4500rpm. These are not like your average V-8. The torque peak in these motors is at 4800rpm I believe and the hp peak is at 5900. To accelerate and get the kick in the pants you have to run it up to redline or really close. My kick in the pants hits aroun 4500-5000, and then keeps going until I shift or hit the rev limiter. It feels like the thing would keep going strong for another 500-1000rpm, but the motors aren't made for that, and the power drops off according to the Porsche dyno charts.
Gotta rev em up if you want to have fun!

Eric,
Congratulations! Check out "101 projects for your porsche 911" on the Pelican web site. You may get some ideas.
Billy (in Minnesota): Are you looking at 911s or 944s? 911s are air cooled/oil cooled cars ... no radiators, no anti-freeze.

Bop on over to http://www.textbooksatcost.com and/or amazon.com and order:
Bentley's "Porsche 911 Carrera Service Manual 1984-1989"
Vic Elford's "Porsche High-Performance Driving Handbook"
Bruce Anderson's "Porsche 911 Performance Handbook"
Paul Frere's "Porsche 911 Story"
I also have the Haynes manual - when I ordered my Bentley manual it was only $35 so I went ahead a picked up the Haynes in case I need a second opinion on something. I've never even taken the shrink-wrap off!
Other hints:
1. Only spend money on the car when you have to - especially if it's a daily driver. I blew about $2500 in the first two months on unnecessary items only to have a $500 necessity pop up when I didn't have the extra cash.
2. Change the oil religiously. I won't even consider starting the synth vs. dino debate again - just keep using the same thing the PO used.
3. Join your local PCA
4. Read RennList and Pelican Parts regularly
5. Don't be afraid to drive the car. Remember, Porsche had 50 years of making VWs hearty, reliable cars, and 25 years refining the 911 before they built yours. These cars have a kind of reliability that the Japanese can't touch - and they only come close by sacrificing the soul of the machine!

OP, enjoy your 3.2, you will absolutely love the car and air cooled experience to boot!
