Opinion-Used '82 SC
Car is a canadian car. I'm in Canada. Service history from 1982 to 2001: 67km to 122 000 miles. Currently has 140000 miles. Car is a TARGA. Silver and in much better cosmetic shape than later vintage cars.
I've been looking for an '84 to '89 Carrera coupe. The one car I found was sold the next day. Most cars in Toronto sit on the lot for months.
Will do a ppi at a reputable (non dealer) Porsche specialist following closer inspection tomorros.
Car is priced way below what I expected to spend. Yet I like this car not because of price but because it is in very nice shape. I've looked at Carreras with half the mileage in bad shape. This car is clean.
Car is not perfect but it is a car that appears to have been taken care of. It looks used but gently used just like I take care of my cars.
How bad are targas? Should I wait for my '84 to '89 non-red coupe?

a Targa is a Targa is a Targa. They aren't bad per se, but unless you like the looks & yearn for a semi-open car, wait. There is nothing worse than compromising on a long-sought acquisition & then realizing (or stumbling across) what you REALLY wanted...

Targas WILL eventually leak, if it doesn't already, and they creak. All of which are "acceptable" tradeoffs if you enjoy the open air. But if your heart is with a coupe, I'd hold out and wait for "the one." As Ked said, there are few things worse than "settling," then stumbling over the "perfect" car. Waiting only makes one appreciate the find that much more ...especially every time you see it in your own garage!

Ditto.... I would only buy a Targa if I really wanted a Targa... the coupe is stronger, quieter, doesn't leak, and IMHO is better looking. Targa seals and top rebuilds add maintenance expense.
But I like to drive with the top off so that outweighed all those things for me.

i have to agree, although i like the wind blowing what little hair i have left and i like the look and feel of the targa. i have been there where i "settled" for something i did not want becasue i thought the price was right, only to stumble across exactly what i wanted a few weeks later.. not a good feeling. think long and hard before you get out the checkbook!!!
