Post How much to pay ?

Hey guys, I am thinking about buying an early 911, like a 65 or 66. I really like those old ones, they are gorgeous in my opinion. I know the later models are better in many ways but I am sure about wanting one from these particular years. What do you think is a reasonable price for one ?

Hi Alex,

Unless you have very compelling reason to go with a SWB 911 (such as vintage racing or concors), you will find the '69 to '73 LWB cars more to your liking. Same classic look, but a longer (more stable) wheel base. Also, all 911's prior to '76 have an anoying tendency to rust, so the older the car, the more likely you will have that problem.

In any event, enjoy the hunt. It took me over 6 months to find mine (rust free).

The Excellence May 2002 issue covered these cars, check it out if you can. Prices vary a lot with other older cars, so his list might a be good starting point.

Here are some examples:

1967 poor 7335
good 8340
excel 11166

1968s poor 9479
good 10777
excel 14428

As stated above these cars, as any other from of this vintage, are known for rust issues. Maybe more so than with a newer car take your time and pay a little more for a great car than go for the fixer up'er. In my experience it's next to impossible to buy cheap and get out ahead with an older car.

Good luck!

Thanks for the info guys. I know the swb cars are less stable but I am not looking for a car to drive excessively fast in, just something to enjoy alongside my 951. I realize many probably have rust issues but like you said it takes time to find the right car. Hell I spent about five or six months just looking for my 951 and thats only 16 years old. Anyhow thanks again, drive safe guys

Alex,

One other point. If you are considering the SWB because you want to avoid DEQ, anything 1974 or older is exepmt. I wanted an early 911 but after a bit of research decdied that LWB was the way to go but did not want any DEQ hassle so that pretty much limited me to '69 thru '74. Since '74 have the 2.7Liter engine, I decided to aviod that year and stick with the long nose models.

Anyway, whatever you decide, I am sure you will have fun.

Do you belong to PCA? If not, you should and come out and drive with us. I've been doing AutoX at PIR and with only 25-30 cars, you get 7 runs for glory and a few for fun!.

Harry -

Thanks for the information. I recently moved here from Michigan and just joined the region out here, haven't been to any events yet but I can't wait. There are so many more Porsches here than in Michigan ! I'm sure we will meet soon, maybe this weekend at PIR.
