Post 1978SC Oil level gage

After overfilling and all the attendent fuss - the oil level gage is still stuck at the max full point with the engine running. The actual oil level is about 1/2 way between the marks on the dip stick - at temp with engine running. Anyone know where the level sensor or whatever is? could the instrument be shot in the dash? Any ideas or direction will be appreciated.

It could be that the gauge is reading correctly. Halfway between min/max is 'full'. Does the gauge go to 0 when the engine is off and once you're moving? If so, you're OK.

I have a similar problem with my SC, the gauge always reads full. I have read that is this is the case the sending unit is bad. It's easy to find, pull of the right rear wheel and you'll see it on the back of the oil tank. As this area is usually dirty from road gunk use some brake clean and a rag to clean it up. Check the wires for tight/clean connections while your in there.

If you gauge reading was ok before your overfill maybe the sending unit is jammed up? Just a thought. Maybe a light rubber mallet to the back of the sending unit might free it up? Make sure you are checking the oil level with a warmed up car on level ground while idling.

Good luck

Chris is right. Gauge will be pegged full scale with an open circuit. Mine is reading full now -- broken wire. I keep the area very clean, but high speed stuff flies up there all the time. Two connectors in a really vulnerable area, large chunks of track rubber wrapped around the sender.

Hi,

my oil level gauge is also playing up - but it flicks really quickly ( not the normal variation during driving ) from empty to full, then sticks on full then sticks on empty.

I'll check the wires. If they all seem ok are there any other wires to check - or just order a new oil level gauge/sender?

Thnks
