Hello all,

After ordering a set of plug wire, a distributor cap, and a rotor, I finally got around to work on the car.

Unfortunately, when I pulled on the rotor, the rotor AND rotor shaft came out. It seems that rotor shaft was rusty and was stuck.

Please see these photos. (about 40KB each)

At the same time, two springs and a washer also came out, as you see in the first picture. Also, there is a felt type material at the tip of rotor shaft. (Picture 3)

Is this shaft still usable, or do I need to get a new one? Can I just clean it and use it? I do see some crack in red plastic piece at the bottom. (picture 4)

If it is still usable, how do I reassemble this piece? I think the springs are hooked on the tips and the washer is to be mounted at the bottom, as in picture 4. Is this correct?

Thanks for your help!

Kide:

I'd be looking for a good used distributor as that one will take some disassembly, repair, and all set back up in a distributor machine to be right.

Looks like the "tinworm" (rust & corrosion) got inside there first,...

This is a good lesson to others who are following this thread to do the preventative maintenance on their distributors to prevent this from happening. The felt pad under the rotor needs some motor oil dripped on it at replacement time and the weights & springs should be sprayed with a moisture dispersant.

There is a good thread on this on Pelican - IIRC, it was either Warren or Sherwood...

Hello all,

Still working on the "no power in rain" situation!

I got a new rotor, distributor cap, plug code, and I finally got a used distributor.
(Used distributor: http://www.geocities.jp/kide_1120/05...istributor.jpg )
It was US$280 - they said new ones cost more than US$650!

So I changed all of that, and set the Z1 mark right on the spot to the pully housing mark. There was no exact match for the rotor position so I tried 2 gears which were closest.

The engine, although starts up very smoothly and idles for a while, becomes irratic and stops.
The engine also stops when I rev the engine.
Exhaust gas has gasoline smell.

Is there any other place where I should be checking for the timing? Or is this something else that I have to fix / replace ??? ( :< )
