Does anyone know if an open-air element (such as a K&N cone type filter) pass CA smog inspection?
I'm not so much concerned about the impact on hydrocarbons, etc, as I am about the visual inspection.

Depends on if it has an E.O. exemption, you can look it up if you know who made it
HERE
But most of the time (Like always) cone filter setups dont incorporate a breather for the crankcase, and provide warm air for warm up in later cars, on a 911 you would only have to worry about the breather hose, but most smog guys dont even pay attention to it. Just ask before you pay for a test. If they wont, borrow another members airbox for a few hours.
