Post California smog requirements!

I'm starting a 3.6L transplant into my '81 SC, and I am not sure what the requirements are here in CA to get the conversion certified. I've searched the CARB site and emailed them, but haven't gotten any hard facts. I would particularly like to know what they will expect in the exhaust system. Does anyone have info or a resource for this? Thanks

A friend dropped a Ford Taurus SHO V6 into his VW-vanagon. I believe the smog requirements will have to be for whatever year engine is going in. Note: 1973 and earlier are smog exempt...

From what I understand if you drop a different engine into a car you have to meet the emmisions requirements for whichever is newer. So you will have to meet requirements for whatever year the 3.6 is.

I've only got hearsay experience, but I am *pretty* sure the requirements are based on how the car is registered - and that is based on the tub - at least in California. For that reason, there is a BIG premium on good '73 and earlier tubs, because you can basically do ANYTHING for an engine and be street legal.

Our chief instructor here in the Bay Area has a '72 tub with a twin-turbo'd 3.8L motor on which he can dial up between 450 and 700 HP by turning the abjustable boost ****. This is absolutely a race car and a race car motor, but it is registered and street legal as a '72 911. And he occasionally drives it to the track...

I wish I had a camera to capture the look on an old man's face gassing up his minivan at a 7-11 a few miles from Thunderhill on a Sunday morning as Hank was firing up his beast after grabbing a coffee on the way to the track. This guy was so mortified by the noise and the appearance of this hugely winged beast that I thought he was going to croak right there on the spot.

Look up MikeZ and Widebody911 on the Pelican parts 911 BBS. They both have done 3.6L transplants in post 73 cars, and live in California. I know widebody got his exempted, but don't know the process he went through.

I rode in Thom's(widebody911) this last weekend, and it was bad a$$!

Dean, Watt's car is one mean machine! I was very impressed last weekend when I saw it.
