Unhappy What's wrong?

my 1976 911s can barely get moving from a dead stop (you have to roast the clutch) but will easily do 80mph in 1st gear and 100mph in 2nd?! My mechanic says its setup for the track but have you ever heard of a car that can't get going from a dead stop? Other than that the car runs great. Strong motor, new clutch, great interior. What gives...

Derek: Sounds to me like you're starting out in 3rd, instead of 1st, and shifting into 4th, instead of 2nd.

umm....if it were only that easy. I'm dead serious. This is how the car is geared.

You may be dead serious, but there's no gear set available that would allow a 915 5-speed (or 4-speed) to go 80 mph in first gear.

In my opinion, you need a new mechanic -- and (depending on how long you've been starting in third gear) probably need a new clutch, too.

Derek
If your car does 100mph in 2nd gear I will gladly drive up from Hammond In to you for a ride.
What is top end??

If you could start on a hill, what an autocross car! Woo hoo! J/K

Did you just have the gears rebuilt yourself? Did you just buy this car? Your mechanic drove the car and saw nothing wrong?

Check your shift linkage... it may FEEL like you are putting it in 1st... but there is no way it IS 1st. There is a coupling under the access panel on the center tunnel behind the seat.... start by trying to adjust that.

Good luck

BTW, can you shift it into 3rd, 4th, and 5th?

Sounds like starting in third to me. Guess that makes this the first Porsche 911 with a 3 speed trans.

As per JCP I would start with the coupler btw the seats. If the clamp is not 100% tight it may have moved and you'll be selecting 3rd even though you're in the 1st gear 'gate'.

I have a crazy 1st in my race car - does about 62mph @ 7000rpm - it is used for rolling starts in a light-weight car with a 3.8RSR engine... AND THAT car is difficult to get going! I feel for you.

Agree with the crowd.

1) Change mechanic.
2) Adjust gear lever.
3) Check clutch (you may be lucky).

Regards, Tom
