Default Heater problem

Hi,

I can't seem to switch off my heating.

I've set the dial to Zero and tried various configurations of the heater setttings, but it still blows out hot air.

Any ideas pls?

thanks

That's funny, I can't seem to figure out how to get heat. I've been meaning to put up a pic so someone can either direct me or tell me I don't have it ?! '78 911sc if you're curious. Guess I'd be a little more annoyed if I couldn't make it stop as apposed to not knowing how to start the heat

At a guess the both of you might look at either, connecting cable between seats and leading backwards to the so called 'snails' otherwise known as flapper boxes, fitted above engine front, on the bulkhead behind rear seats,
as these are prone to seizing either open or shut thus either conducting hot or cold air depending on position seized, hope this helps in both querys.

Do you have the red levers to turn on the heater manually or is it the automatic heater control? If uatomatic, check your fuses and relays. If they are OK, therod may be out of adjustment. I guess my next question is....did it ever work and just quit suddenly or has it never worked?

Spider,

Based on the question I think it was directed towards me
It's a '78 without the auto heat option. Actually I just picked up the car about a week and a half ago and have been too busy having fun driving it to figure out how to use the thing

This must be one of those initiation things that needs to be worked out for new porsche owners
Not to say that I won't accept any tips

I found this link, but it still needs more explaination

Mine coincidentally has rotary and both levers apparently bolted in 'tandem' although
on or off, despite the incremental control illustrated on dial,

But, what is the connection with rubber sensor, by rear view mirror which (When earthed) causes the rotary actuator motor to whirr!

How do you test the sensor for good, or not?

I don't know how Porsche would do it, but for cooling I'd use a small fan and for heat a hair blow dryer. See if they have any effect. If it a thermostat, it ought too do something when extremes are used to vary temperatures.

Very confusing thread. Of course, heating & AC is stunningly confusing on our cars.

Whoever has no heat:

Is the main fan working?

No? Check fuse, fan, relay

Yes? If no Auto heat: Check valve on heat exchanger & cables If Autoheat: Check actuator rod (in console), check valve on heat exchanger & cables

Whoever has too much heat:

Check valve on heat exchanger & cables

Report back . . .

imcarthur,

hehe.. yeah, I'm the one with no heat, but the fan works okay (no autoheat). I'm just trying to get a hold of a manual so that I know what the heat exchanger and cables looks like

Thanks for the tips.

Amolak,
Sorry to jump in on your thread.

This is where you find it. The valve is open in this pic & the heater & blower are off. The spring holds it here until you turn the controls (the red flappers) on. The valve gets stuck - very common.

For the Too Much Heat Guys:

If it is seized closed, you would have a constant flow into the cabin - I believe.

I know this is an old thread... sorry for resurrecting, but I just found out I have the same problem in my '84 last night. No heat, but the blower works and everything. Just never blows warm air. I assume this setup would be the same for an '84 with the automatic control instead of the levers... I'll try and get under the car to check it out later today or tomorrow.

I'm also getting air but it's only cold air. All fuses are intact. The heater blower motor comes on just before you start the engine. Otherwise, how do you check the functioning of a relay?
I guess the next thing to check is the control between the seats and then those "snails" in the rear wheelwells?

I just saw this thread pop up again. Yes. That picture is actually my car with AutoHeat. But that part in a manual heat is the same.

Chris

For Autoheat cars, the center console has a dial with 9 positions. Manual have 3 & paddles. If you do have Autoheat, the 1st thing to check with no heat is the connecting rod on the actuator inside the console. See Autoheat
