Question Hurting my 3.2l engine?

Hi everyone,

I have been enjoying my newly-acquired (3 months only) '87 3.2l a bit more every time I take it out. Most recently, I hit the rev limiter (between 6k and 7k rpm) on a couple of occasions as I was listening to the flat 6 and not paying attention to the rpm!

Am I hurting my engine when doing so or is it OK to hit the limiter once in a while?

Thanks for your answers!

Hi:

If I might offer you a bit of sage advice as I've been doing this for some time,........

I would NOT run the engine up against its rev limiter unless you have some very deep pockets,.....LOL. Its there to protect you as a last ditch measure but its not intended to be used as a continual rev cutoff at every (or most) shift. There is no real need to "wring its neck",...

The stresses on the rod bolts are quite high at that point as compression loads on the rods instantly change to tensile and the stock Porsche rod bolts will not take that for long without stretching to yield.

You are well over the HP peak with stock-type cams at 6600 RPM so watch the tach and listen/feel to the engine to shift before redline,.... I like 6300-6400 as a peak RPM unless lots of internal modifications are performed.

i.e. the forces on the rod bolts go from trying to compress them (make them shorter) to stretching them.... you can imagine how the bolts feel about this...

Thanks a lot for the answers. I hit the limiter twice by mistake ... not as a cutoff at every shift!!

I will be more careful (cannot afford a new engine at this point in time!!).

Thanks again,
