Post Ruf Oil Cooler upgrade ?

My 80SC still has the loop oil cooler and an upgrade is needed. I find myself not wanting to drive her on real hot days here in So. Cal. I've read most of the old posts on this subject and was wondering where you would buy a Ruf cooler kit? I've seen their web site and they don't show a picture of the valance just the cooler and no prices.
My car doesn't have a chin spoiler so the upgrade might be an improvment? plus this would take care of the cooling problem once and for all
Also would this system be easier to install than the fender mount and does it need fans?
Thanks Guys

I don't know the price of the Ruf cooler/valence combination, but I'm sure it's MUCH (as in: much, much, much) more expensive than replacing your loop cooler with a Carrera unit, as well as adding a shroud and a fan.

Unless you're regularly tracking the car, or have done some really wild performance enhancements, the Carrera cooler should be more than you need.

Thanks Amir and Jack. I'm sure the Ruf kit once I get it priced out will give me a reality check. The fender cooler kit looks like about $1,200. bucks OE new W/fan and if I use a Spal fan it will less.
I was thinking the Ruf kit might be an easier install if they don't need fans? but then I would have to do the fog lights and Paint.
Thanks again Bob

Bob,

I installed the RUF front valance and RUF oil cooler on my 81SC. You can order it directly from RUF (www.ruf-automobile.de), or from Stefania (www.stefaniacorp.com) in the US. I've found Weissach's prices to be too high to be competitive.

It has alot going for it. It's made of polyurethane, so if you scrape it on the street, it won't shatter like fiberglass. The oil cooler flows the oil left to right, vs up and down, so you get maximum cooling. There's no room for a fan, so sitting in stop and go traffic won't get any cooling air to the cooler (unlike the Carrera option mentioned by Jack). When I bought mine, it was like $1K for the valance and around $900 for the cooler. If you do go for it, and you don't already have a rear tail, you should strongly consider it. Putting a front valance like the RUF valance on the front without a rear wing will unbalance the handling at high speed. Paul Frere's 911 Story has the various impacts of wing/no wing and valance/no valance on handling.

The quote I obtained from Ruf back in February was

Oil cooler front DM 2795.00 (~$1400us)
Oil cooler side with fan DM 2950.00 (~$1500us)
R11 500 503 02 front spoiler DM 1860.00 (~$950 US)

Bob,

If you think you'll never track your car, a cost-effective alternative may be the 28 tube brass oil cooler. I had one installed this year, and for 'regular' driving, it was very effective - even during the hot days (90+ degrees)we had here in the mid-Atlantic region this summer. The highest temps I saw were 220 degree max,in stop & go traffic, and that was not sustained - once I got moving again, the temp dropped. I've seen them for sale for $120-$175 range, and all that is needed is a bracket to mount it where the loop cooler is located.

As I consider replacing the front trombone cooler I've started researching alternatives and have come across a replacement cooler from Mocal, can be seen at www.batinc.net. Seems like a less expensive option then the Pellican package. Anyone have any experience with this company or their oil cooler?

There is such a huge range of options any other recs? Thanks

I have one of the 28 row brass coolers for my 3.2. These babies do a great job disappating heat (I do not track my car) and I have found mine to be very effective in stop and go as well as highway.....no fan needed. They can be had relatively cheaply(per John D)if the word doesn't get out about how efficient they are.

Who makes the 28 row cooler, where can I find it? A direct bolt on without a fan, etc would be amazing.

The 28 row coolers are not made anymore. They are effective heat sinks on a daily driver, not relying on airflow to cool - much better than the stock loop coolers. However, they may not be the best choice if you do track work, as the radiator-style cooler in either the wheel well or front valance locations. There are various radiator-style fender mount solutions: Mocal (as mentioned), B&B, Earl's, Porsche, and others. If you mount a fan, you don't want to use one of those plastic kits to mount the fan to the radiator, rather, you need to mount the fan by an alternate means. The B&B, for example, has brackets on the outside tanks to hold the fan. When I had an Earl's cooler, I used an SPAL fan with my own brackets (easy to do).

There is an article on pre-89 engine cooling on tech.rennlist.com under 911 engines, which may help answer some questions.

Thanks Guys: A brass early cooler would be an easy way to go. I saw one on ebay awhile back but it was kind of bent up. I guess they are durable enough that they don't need a shield? I'm Surprised Nobody is remaking them.

I could start there as I don't do any Track driving now and always upgrade if I need to.

If anybody Knows of a Good 28 row brass cooler let me know.

Now what can I spend all the money I save on??

Bob,

Don't worry - you'll find SOMETHING you'll want/need for that flat six - and probably sooner than later! *G* Also, if you're trying to locate a 28 tube brass cooler, in addition to the Rennlist classifieds, check out the PCA club classifieds.

Thumbs up

I have the brass 28 row cooler and have posted my experiences with the system here. While more then adequate for the street, they are not up to the task for the track. As you gain more experience on the track, you spend less time coasting and the heat load goes up significantly. When I finally upgrade the cooler, I will have the brass cooler available in very good condition.

Check out the Swiss coupe and how he has done the oil cooling while maintaining a stock look. You have to scroll down....

I am going to get a box welded into my 74 Targa and ordered a big Mocal cooler. That should take care for the 3.6 conversion. I don't think a big RS spoiler looks right on a narrow-body G-model.

If being stuck in traffic with no airflow becomes an issue I will add a fan. The stock brass lines to the thermostat might dissipate enough heat, though.

Ingo
