Good engine class in northern NJ?
Hello all,
I just picked up my 951 from the shop for the 2nd time this year with another bill of over $2000. I would like to start doing some of this work myself bur have little to no experience under the hood (except for oil and brake pad changes).
I look to this board for some recommendation on a class(es) (either at a college or tech school, or private) that I could take to help me get started. I have a friend who took an engine repair class a few years ago and it turned out to be a waste of time.
Any info would be great.

While a lot of vocational schools and community colleges offer auto repair classes, I doubt such an engine repair class will do much good for a P-car owner. At best you'll get the theory of how things work (ignition, braking, suspension, etc) and maybe pick up some diagnostic skills. But such classes usually use the teacher's or a student's car for a teaching model. I doubt you'll ever hear a word about many issues Porsche owners regularly encounter.
The best education you can get (and still keep your day job) is to read the Bentley Manual, surf this and the Pelican site every day, attend tech sessions with your local PCA chapter and maybe ask your wrench to let you watch a repair. I have no formal training, am a total novice and I fully plan to do my own valve adjustment and clutch replacement based on what I've learned from the above-mentioned websites.

Bruce Anderson runs some 911 classes in CA. You can see what they offer at http://www.911handbook.com/classes.html. Sometimes G&W in Virginia runs some Porsche-specific classes also. One thing you'll want to get is the factory service manual, since nobody else makes one for the 951's or 993 (AFAIK). Call Hendrick Porsche in Charlotte (800-315-8193) as they discount 20%-30%,which will ease the price sting of the pricey factory manuals. As mentioned sometimes PCA regions offer tech sessions which can help (Think PCA Jersey Shore Region may do a couple a year). A class on automotive mechanics to better understand the principles behind what makes an engine/transmission go also might not be a bad idea, to establish a fundamental base towards understanding your Porsche's.
