Question Superchargers

Has anyone out there supercharged a 911SC yet? If so, have you been satisfied with the results? I've already added SSI's and a dual-in/dual-out muffler, and noticed an improvement already. I've given thought to going the carb/cam/3.2L pistons and cylinders route as well. Any advice to this novice '81 SC Targa owner would be appreciated. <img src="graemlins/wave.gif" border="0" alt="[byebye]" />

Ah...this is an area of where I have oodles/tons/a buttload, etc. of experience!

1) Don't do it!

2) Invest in an Electromotive HPV-1 or similar ignition system.

3) Ask Webcam what it would take for a set of cams to provide a 15-20HP increase, ask about the 20/21 grind.

4) If you want to upgrade to 3.2 Pist./Cyl. go for it, but certainly do the carbs upgrade.

5) Take the rest of your $$$$$ and buy a 7:31 ring and pinion - PAY someone to install it and set it up properly...while you're in there, renew the dog/engagement teeth on 1st, 2nd and 3rd...and why not get new synchros while you're at it...they're only about $20 each.

Otherwise it sounds like you could go for a 3.2 or 3.6 motor swapout?

All in all, the supercharger setup for an SC is &lt;OKAY&gt; but EVERYONE gets greedy and works out more HP, gee, how do I know that?

Plain and simple, the SC motor came with cast, not forged...and usually crappy Kolbenschmidt pistons and cylinders - NOT built for supercharging or boost at any rate. You'll wind up breaking some ring lands and paying for someone's version of forged pistons only to wind up in hell...a car that won't run right, but will be pretty fast when mashed to the floor. You will get what basically amounts to NO support for your upgrade...even from the people who provided the kit. (ask me offline, I have THREE references, all with supercharged 911s) You'll constantly have to "fiddle" with it, your exhaust will smell, your Wife/girl/kids/neighbors will HATE the car and so will you, eventually...gee, how do I know that as well?

I have THREE sets of pistons that would make great paperweights...if only I could find a market.

Okay, the good sides...the car will attract a lot of attention at social events and when you pull in a gas station and check the fluid level on your polished supercharger. You get to add one of those oh so cool 930 whale tails. ...and finally, YES - the car will be pretty darned fast.

Overall, the Supercharger installation was fun, while it lasted...would I do it again? Let's just say the most fun I ever had with my SC is selling the Supercharger kit, installing an Electromotive HPV-1 distributorless ignition and taking the rest of the $$$$$$ (from the sale of the Supercharger kit) and blew it on DE weekends and sticky tires.

...now that's PURE satisfaction. :bouncer:

Cool

Thank you. It seems likely many naive owners [like ME] will benefit from your awful experience.

My buddy has a 911SC with the supercharger. Upgraded to 98mm pistons, etc. Ran too much boost (and IMHO ran too high compression), got detenotion, cracked cylinders. Bad news.

It's quick though!

Thank you both for responding to my requests for information. I fell in love with a '81 SC [the year my twins were born] and I plan on keeping it forever. I know I'm a fool, but I'm hell-bent on spending my twins' inheritance on improving straight-line performance, IMHO, the car's ONLY flaw. I e-mailed Paul Burch of SoK and expressed my concerns about my cast pistons, and he responded with saying 5-6 pounds of boost should be no problem. If I could get 250-260 reliable horsepower, as opposed to the 300 claimed @ 8-10 psi, for $6K, I think I would be happy. Do you gentlemen believe 5-6 psi would be "safe" for short periods of time on the street. I don't plan on tracking the car. Could I also install the 7:31 ring and pinion, properly set-up, of course, if I installed a tranny cooler as well? TIA for your help! Brian Howe
