Chris M, I was able to find a 75k mile triple black 90 C4 Cab for $18.5K (dealer wanted $20k), with very minor issues. They're out there, timing & persistence in your search are everything.

ebay now (no idea of condition, just looking at relatively low miles around his pricing):

4555959884
4556121736
4555737423 (I threw this one in, just because )

964 for under $25K? No problem. 993? Another story.

In general the 993s do not go under $25k unless there is something wrong with them. Occasionally, one will go for around $25k with higher mileage and an anxious seller.
I am going to support/endorse the Boxster S recommendation, especially if you like cabs.

You can get a VERY nice 993 - a very reliable, beautiful 911 that will hold its value for $35k. I bought an excellent condition 96 (12hp more than 95) with 38k miles for less than that...

Still does I know some people don't like red interiors, but I love it. Classic like the old 550 Spyders (Silver Blue/Red = Polar Silver/Flamenco)...

I think we are making this guy pretty confuse! Bottom line, his $35k budget is good enough for any 911, except for the 1989 Speedster and someTurbos, any 964 and most 993 from 1995 and even 1996...which one to get? It's your call my friend...ask your heart...and get a PPI!

Take care...

Sounds like I should have browsed around here before selling mine for $33K on Cars.com. I just sold my 96 993 today. Polar Silver, Black Leather, Alum gauges, Alum shifter, brake and door sills, six speed, 48K miles with all maintenance documented. It had some paint work on the hood and front fender, but is a beautiful straight, well maintained car with a new clutch, plugs, rear main seal among other things just 1K miles ago. Sounds like I may have left a couple thous. bucks on the table.

Not necessarily - I think our group of owners may value their cars differently from the market realities...

I've had my '86 carrera coupe for 4 years anf 17000 miles, had a lot of fun ( including track days) and every penny I've spent on the car ( incl gas, oil, maintenance, insusrance, taxes etc) totals $33K.

$7k of that was for top end rebuild and the tranny work while it was apart.

As far as reliability goes the car has never left me stuck anywhere. The money was for maintenance and needed upgrades.

For $35K you can have a lot of fun.

911s, particularly air cooled versions are very reliable cars. Its just that when something does go wrong, the parts are marked up 30-50% for various reasons, aka "porsche tax"...also porsche mechanics charge a premium hourly rate.

My 86 was purchased for $17K at 64K miles. 2 years later...the car has almost 130K. Other than a failed alternator, it has never left me stranded. Runs great, pretty fast and draws compliments every day..... the only drawback to the older ones is the crappy AC. If I were you, Id take the advice to go for a Carrera or well sorted out 964 and spend the money on updating the shocks, tires, all of the sensors, etc. to get it back to top condition.

dont forget the classics, for that monney you can have a perfect 2.2 or 2.4 E from a good reliable dealer, even maybe an S (although they tend to be more expensives here in europe)

I'd go with a 993 -- I've owned two of them -- the best car is the 95' that year does not suffer the CEL issues the 96' thru 98' MY do. I just sold a 95' with 19K miles for $36K

with that kind of budget you should be able to look at early 911 like the 2.2 and 2.4, maybe not an S type but an E one for sure and in a very good state.

I got mine for 1.5 yers now and it runs every day, it looks reliable to me. Of course you ll have to be attentive when buying but what a pleasure !

Ah I forgot, go for the targa and forget about the possible leaks, open the top and drive summer and winter time
