Post cigarette lighter - Size of receptacle?

I just bought an 87 3.2 cab. If I plug a radar detector into it, it feels loose and doesn't work. Is the cigarette lighter receptable the same size as other brands of cars etc nissan ? How can I fix this.? Is there an adapter to buy. chuck

You have the older, larger size cigarette lighter. I know since I went thru the same thing. I have an 86' and my phone etc would not work. Newer cars have a smaller hole. Look at the plug for your spare tire compressor, that's the right size. There must be an adapter.

congrats on your new Porsche....

There's a plastic shim that goes around your adaptor that'll take up the slack. Should've been packaged with your radar detector.

Or do the He - Man method and widen the outer terminals on your plug. (My way)

Is it possible that the cigarette lighter is on the blink? Mine won't power my V-1 and its driving me nuts. Going to try the termanals idea and try and form a plastic ring (none received with my V-1).

Obviously, Germans like them bigger around than we do in the USA. My solution was to hard wire in a USA sized female receptacle. It is semi hidden, under the dash...

If the lighter socket isn't working for the radar detector, check the fuse for the recepticle. They blow easily. If you replace the fuse and it blows again right when you turn the key, you have a short circuit. If that's the case, the socket is threaded like a light bulb so it comes out easily. That is how I fixed mine.

I have the same problem with my V1. I thought of spreading out the metal clips, but I use the V1 in my other car as well and it fits fine there. By the way the other ride is an MB, so it's not just a German car thing. I will have to hardwire it but haven't gotten around to it yet. For those of you who have, what wire you you tap into to hardwire the V1?

I had the same problem plugging in my GPS, a few wraps of electrical tape on the end of the plug fixed it.
