I had the freon changed on my 86' and it blows plenty cold for me. In Palm Springs last summer did the job fine. I do believe they changed vents with MY 86' so it could be simple greater air movement.

86: Yes, with the bigger factory vents ('the '86 was the first year) the job is much easier. Occasionally you will have a hose problem, maybe a noisy evaporator housing fan, but generally speaking success is far easier to accomplish with your car than an SC.

Jack mentioned his underbelly condenser. I've added one in the front left fender. A guy on Pelican added one to his rear left fender. It's mods like this that will get your temps down into the 30s. If it were my car, and I were serious about cold a/c in the summer heat here's what I'd do (actually, this is what I did to my Targa):
Replace all the hoses with barrier hoses. www.rennaire.com sells a reasonably priced hose kit.
Replace the receiver/dryer with a ProCooler. www.procooler.com.
Add a condenser/fan in the front left fender and relocate the washer bottle and vapor recovery tank.
Open, clean and reseal the evaporator box. Clean the evaporator while you're in there.
Add a Kuehl center vent, or the three vent system. www.griffiths.com
My car is an 84, so it has the Nippondenso compressor. Your car came with the York. Ditch it. You can buy a Sanden from www.vertexauto.com that will come with a mounting bracket for the 3.0 engine. The Sanden is a piston compressor. The only true rotary for our cars is the Seiko-Seiki, which is available from www.scottsind.com (Performance Aire). I've talked to several experts about the benefits of the rotary over a piston unit like the Nippondenso or Sanden. As far as cooling performance is concerned, the pundits I've spoken with say that a piston unit is as good as a rotary. For performance and less power-hogging, the rotary is better. My car is plenty powerful, so I stuck with the Nippondenso and saved several hundred dollars by not buying a Seiko.
After all this work is done, pull a vacuum on your system and be sure it's not leaking. Then, recharge with R12. I know, I know, it's spendy. Though many people (including Jack, I think) are using 134 successfully, R12 is still be better way to go. And, if your system isn't leaking, you won't be topping it off regularly.

Good advice. My Porsche guy here is going through the entire system today and has lots of tricks. He is doing more than I mentioned. I know nothing about a/c. His 1979 911 is an Ice Box! He knows what he's doing with 34 years experience and has mods. that he does and adds new parts. He's tossing 1/2 the system. I'll let you guys know how it turns out in a few weeks with details. Okay guys,
I got my car back with the A/C upgrade. I'm quite satisfied with the coolness of the car. It is humid and 90 plus degrees here. New barrier hoses, Rotary Compressor upgrade, 24 hour leak down test, Condensor cleaned out, and new Receiver/ Dryer. It is very comfortable after 5 minutes. The car runs much smooother with A/C on compared to with the York compressor. I may add the blowers mentioned later.
Had a Fuel problem too, Changed the Injector Head and Fuel Acumulator. Much stronger over 5000 rpm. Lights up the tires now.
Had The Brake Rotors changed, added Mintex Pads, and new Brake Lines installed too.

My Buddy Bob Farmer at http://www.farmersautomotive.com He does excellent work. I think it is a Sanden Compressor. I'll look tonight when I get home. Total A/C system mod. was $1400. I had a lot more done and the bill hit $3400, but, my car is like new and I'm keeping it.

Ron: If Bob told you a Sanden was a rotary compressor, he misled you. Here's a link to the Sanden website. As you can see, the Sanden 5 Series compressors (you probably have a 507 or 508) are piston compressors. Don't get me wrong...they're good compressors, but they are NOT rotary. The only rotary compressor for our cars is the Seiko-Seiki.

You can call him at (317) 894-8185. He'll talk your ear off so plan out some time. I don't know how much it was alone because it was part of the entire a/c conversion. Check out http://www.farmersautomotive.com I just talked to him 5 minutes ago. He does part of the work and has an a/c specialist do the leak down and freon.
