gas overflow canister
I am finishing a fiberglass body on my 911 and under the drivers fender is a canister that is connected to the pipe were you fill the tank. I was thinking of removing the tank. Can that be done? What does that canister do exactly. Thanks John

Basicly, it absorbs gas vapors and then sends them back to the tank later on.
It's a bad idea to remove it - if done improperly, you increase the risk of a fire, get gas squirting on the ground, etc.
If done properly, your car pollutes a lot more, gas mileage goes down somewhat, and you may flunk emissions inspections.

What I did with mine was install a surge tank from a '73 911. The plumbing is this: Tank vent to reservoir (installed in the driver's side cowl area) Reservoir to fitting in Driver's fender. This prevents liquid from surging from the tank on right turns but allows the tank to vent. I did this because somebody took all the OE vapour recovery stuff off and I was dumping fuel in turns with full tank. Works fine and was cheap.
