Default 911 SC Key, where to get a good one

Hi,

new to the site and new to owning a Porsche. I get my 83 911 SC today, traded my RX-7 and money for it. Well I only get one key for it, a junk duplicate, no original. While I was at Walmart I go to see if they can make another key, no dice. So later on, I let a friend drive the car and he stalls it, he turns the ignition and and the key breaks off! So no Where can I get a good key made, like the factory set or of the same quality? If anyone knows a part number it would be helpful! Other than this the car is awesome!

There is that, the closest one is 3 hours away; I was thinking of a stop gap solution unti then.

I had a similar problem with my 84... only came with the "valet" key... difference is I didn't have mine break off in the switch... ouch.

That said, the dealer closest to me (160 miles) wouldn't send me a cut key.. they offerred to sell me the blank to have one made. I ended up ordering one off of Pelican and need to get it to the locksmith to cut, but it still won't be the master for the car which means I can't use the factory alarm. Oh well... I'm probably going to put an aftermarket one in anyway...

I got my key blank at our local dealership, $15.00. I have seen Porsche key blanks in either Performance Products or Mid America Motorworks (used to be Tweeks). The problem I had was getting a hardware store to cut it for me. They would only cut their own key blanks. I had to go to a locksmith business to get it done and they wouldn't gaurentee it, but it worked fine.

Yeah, I have a lock smith that will do it, but I think they will charge me for a key anyway, so they make money.

Nice SC!!

I bought a replacement key once and one locksmith gave me a bad time about cutting it. He said the material was alot harder than the blanks he uses and would wear his cutting wheel out. I had to find another smithy.

Hate to tell you, but you will have your best and only luck with Porsche. I got my car with NO key and the only way I could get it was through Porsche. That or or have a very talented locksmith. They will order it using your VIN and it took about 7 days total.

OK, first of all I hope that you get your key thing fixed, but you cant leave us hanging with only one pic. Lets see the inside, back side, other side. Come on hook the rennlist brothers (and sisters) up. Congrats on the car, it looks great.

I actually have an aftermarket Momo key (it appears to be silver plated!) with a burlwood head. I got it on eBay for less than $25, but they are NLA unless you find old stock somewhere.
It was cut at a local shop for $1.25 and works better than the worn original.
