Early versus late
Since having my beautiful 951 totaled last summer, I've gotten the itch, and the insurance check, to get back into a p-car. I love the lines of the 84-89 carrera coupe without a tail. I've been a water cooled guy up until now so I've got a lot of questions, most importantly I thought I remembered hearing about updates around '87. Could someone please fill me in? and is it really worth it? Also, can anyone compare this to the 911 SC? Aside from the smaller engine and less power.
THanks

In 87 the Carrera received the G50 transmission, an improvement to the 915 transmission that was used in the 84-86 cars (and SCs). The G50 is a more hardy transmission that is more "user friendy" (smoother). I've driven 911s with both, but I'm not astute enough to notice a huge difference (unless your are driving a 915 tranny that is worn out). If you purchase a pre-87 911 with a 915 transmission that has solid synchros or has been rebuilt recently I don't think you will be disappointed with the performance at all.
You pretty much have a handle on the differences between the SC and Carrera. In addition to the 3.2 engine the Carrera uses DME (motronic) system as opposed to the CIS injection used on SCs. Go to the 911 SC FAQs on Rennlist for more info. Hope this helps.
