Default Advice needed on '80 SC I'm looking at tomorrow

I'm looking to buy one of these for auto-x/track days. I'll drive it around town some, but it's mostly going to be a track school.

A local Porsche shop is selling the car on consignment. It's an '80 SC coupe, metallic brown. 77k miles, new clutch, tires, wheel bearings and a bunch of other stuff. Leakdowns are 2-4%, so the motor is strong. Car is completely stock.

It doesn't have the rear wing or front valance, which I want. How hard is it to find the factory peices used? Or are there good aftermarket alternatives? I also want to add a roll bar and harnesses. Any recommendations?

Body and interior are immaculate and look new. Paint is very, very nice. Asking price is $14k, according to NADA this seems to be in the ball park, what do you guys think?

I'm going back tomorrow to drive the car, what should I be looking for specifically?

Get a pre-purchase inspection by another shop other than the one selling it.

Having done this myself, you'll spend more money on a stock car to prepare it for the track than buying one that's already been 'updated' for track usage. If you haven't already, the 911SC FAQ on tech.rennlist.com, especially the last chapter, may be of interest.

If you're getting harnesses, plan on getting seats with shoulder cutouts that support the harnesses. Some PCA regions won't allow harnesses without the right seats - it's a safety thing.

Rollbar, I like the DAS bar for the SC, as it sits on the sills, which is an inherantly strong part of the body. I'd avoid one like the Autopower than has feet that sit on the floor (unless you weld in an 'L' shaped piece of metal between the sill and floor).

Factory parts for front valance extension and Carrera tail are available, as are fiberglass tails (I installed one from MA Shaw that fit right into the rear lid).

SC's are great cars...good luck!

So you can't use the stock seats with a rollbar that has a harness bar? I'd love to find a car that's already prepped, but this car is *super* clean...

How much are the factory parts for the valance and wing vs the MA Shaw or other aftermarket alternatives?

Go to one of the discounting Porsche dealers and ask what Carrera tail kit part number 911.512.909.00 would run and call MA Shaw and ask them. If you need some leads on discounting Porsche dealers, pm or email me.

The concern with stock seats and harnesses is that the harness can slide on the side of the seat, which may not hold you in an emergency situation.
