Default Windshield Film

I have recently bought an 88 Carrera Coupe and the front windshield appears to have a crack on the drivers side at the bottom. When I looked closer, the previous owner had removed a sticker and tore a film that covers the entire front windshield. This caused the rip in the fim. I think the only way to get rid of it is to replace the windshield. I got a price on it for $630.

Does anyone know what the film is and if there is a way to repair it.

Normally, the front windshield is glass, as you'd expect (typically a sandwich of glass with plastic material in between). I have a friend who put a film covering on his windshield to diminish the rock chips from track usage. Perhaps that is what is applied to your windshield?

The '88s, or at least some of them, had a special windshield called a Sekuriflex, I think, that had an extra layer of plastic on the inside. In NJ where I live they let you put your inspection sticker in the left rear window instead of the left lower corner of the windshield, so the coating doesn't get ruined when they take a razor blade to the old sticker to remove it. The inspection people tell me that they see very few cars that still have the Sekuriflex.

Thanks mstier, that is exactly what mine has. It is on the inside of the w/s and it was removed in the spot where the sticker was. I guess my only option would be to replace the w/s.

Thanks again guys.
