Default harness bar

Hello, anyone know if I can mount a harness bar AND the factory belts? Would it be safe and legal for a Metro DE? Only reason I ask is I have my first DE coming up and have the harness bar and a camera mount but have not yet gotten harnesses. I would like to video it and thought I may be able to bolt the factory belts over the bar. thanks.

p.s. I cant find it anymore after searching but does anyone know where I can get the fire extinguisher mount that uses the back seatbelt mounts in a 911SC? thanks again.

depending on the mount - yes. On my 71 and 84, I simply "looped" the belt over the harnes guide bar. My 95 has a harness mount (different than the guide), and is offset toward the back. It came with longer bolts and you simply mount the factory seatbelt guide on top of the harness mounting frame. There may be some mounts/guides out there that don't work this way, but I have done this with all my cars so I can use the standard belts to get to/from the event.

I use a Stable Energies bar and it co-exists very nicely with my stock belts.

However, note that harness setup in the picture would not be usable in all PCA regions for DE. Ours, and others (but not all), require a seat which supports harnesses, in order to use harnesses. That typically means a seat with cutouts in the shoulder region for harnesses. Metro NY doesn't make that distinction on their tech inspection form.

If you have a camera mount which will safely mount/retain the camera to the harness bar, you should be able to use that as is.

Bill,

Thanks for highlighting this issue. For each person going to a harness, they need to evaluate the entire restraint system to ensure their personal safety.

I am aware that there are "issues" with my bar setup as shown. For this thread, I wanted to illustrate that there are bars out there that allow you to keep use of your 3-point belts.

As you may be aware, I use this set-up solely for AutoX. For DE's, the bar stays home and I use my stock belts for the reasons you cite. If (when) I get a proper seat, I will use my harness at DE's as well.

I've got Simpson belts and have the stock belts as well as the Simpsons mounted. Its a lot easier to drive around town with the stocks on and DE with the Simpsons. The only people I see with race belts on when driving on the street are 18 year old Honda drivers.

If you are going to buy a harness bar, I would recomment Brey Krause. The bar fits without problems and has the guide loops to make the bar truly effective. I leave it in the car in between track days with no ill effects (this is assuming you don't stuff midgets into the back seats). Between track days, i just hide the harnesses underneath the rear mats.
