FYI, Pete I'ver heard that the valve guide issue was a result of a " bad batch" form a supplier.
This means not all 3.2s will have this problem. I've also heard that the wear shows up under 80k if it is going to.

I've got a 80 911SC with 110,000 miles on . I had the engine apart and only replaced all 12 lower dilivar studs (I had two broken ones), new gaskets and put it all back together. Everything looked realy good so I opted not to do a top end rebuild at the time. I did the oil fed chain tensioner upgrade including the later sprocket support arms and new chain ramps at the same time. I'm going for the record on miles before a rebuild.

Pleased to report that my 84 3.2 Carrera has over 203,000 miles. The original/prior owner of 17 years kept it "by the book" and it shows. The car looks/runs like it is 5 years old with a few weekend miles. Recent inspection (finally did a post-purrchase inspection, almost a year after buying it) shows factory parts throughout, tight harnesses, 1-2% leakdown, and truely unmolested set-up.

"Front right rim is scuffed", "needs new rear tires (don't we all?)" were the only comments, JOY....

Fat book of records indicate a top-end rebuild at 168,000 and a tranny rebuild at 186,000 which included a clutch and a change in the final ratio back to stock. The bottom end is untouched, we do not leak/drip/burn/smoke ANY oil. Not even a quart after 1000 miles.

A high-mile car is a great way to get into a Porsche, especially if it is not going to be a daily driver.

After reading Speedraser's and zzopit's posts I am convinced that the well maintained cars of any make last many, many miles.(247k on a turbo?) WOW! It is very unlikely Rob is the original owner of his 1980SC. I still own a '91 Mercury Capri XR2 I bought new and it has 175,000 miles and it still has it's original turbo never rebuilt! And this from a very cheap "sporty" car. ($15k new) It has to be the fresh Mobil 1 every 2,500 miles.

Hi Kyle,
I have been driving my 82 911SC for almost 19 years. It is now registering 286k on the original speedo. I did the chain tensioner update at 213k and did a top end (clutch, rings, valves, valve guides, rod bearings, timing chains & ramps ), at 233k. That was 4 years ago. I drive the car daily and run it up to over 6k in 1st and 2nd gear alot. That's about as fast as I can get away with here in So. Calif. I autocross it(mildly) 6 times a year. I have a cat bypass and a B & B muffler. I've also installed the pop-off valve and turbo tierods.I am hoping to see 300K and much more.

Ken

I'm the second owner - purchased from an MD @ 146k miles and currently have 196k. Car is completely original and the engine hasn't been opened - no top end done, no tensioner upgrade...doesn't blow any smoke whatsoever, has one very minor leak, starts immediately although at present I'm fighting stumbling and low idle on cold start (anybody out there had any success with Stoddard's 'superswitch'?). Does have the pop-off valve and a K&N filter installed and the transmission was rebuildt @ 165k, the targa top was recovered by Original Fit Interiors (ok, not great). I've just moved to Temecula so my next project is to install the Carrera type aux oil cooler - the car can't handle the heat! GREAT CAR!

Dale...good nice Targa. What color is it?

What do you mean when you say it can't handle the heat?

Jaxon: dark grey exterior with black interior...I used to live a couple of miles from the beach and the weather never got much hotter than 80 degrees but this past June I moved inland to the desert and it'll get over 100 degrees during the summer and probably averages at least 90 degrees most days...I've noticed my car seems to be running hotter than when I first purchased it 3 yrs ago and now that I'm living in this warmer climate it is definitely running way too hot.

Dale: An upgrade I did on my 80SC was to change the trombone loop to a 28 row brass cooler that recommended to me on this BB. It seems to have lowered my temps by about 15/20 deg. And the cooler was only 150.00. Maybe your car has this style already?. They were only used a couple of years around 83 in the USA.
My SC only has 75k miles on it and thinks it's a new car still.
Cheers

I bought my "77" targa with 170,000 on the car and the "84" 3.2 that was installed in "99" had 109,000. Right now I,ve got 173,300 on the car and 115,300 on the engine and she runs great. No smoke, starts real quik and burns less than 1 quart per 1,000. Have no prior records of engine before it was dropped into this car, but mucho records of the work done on previous 2.7.
O.T.- One question, everything sounds fine when running (like sewing machine) whats the average milage before I should start thinking about a valve adjustment?
Thanks, Rick
