Default targa top re-skinning

I just had the targa top on my '85 re-skinned, inside and out. I'm a little disappointed that the vinyl doesn't seem as snug as it should - it's like a bedsheet with a slight roll in it rather than a taught flat fit. Is this normal, say to avoid overstretching when it's folded, or did i just get a sloppy job? I don't remember it being like this after my last re-skin (circa '96), but it's been awhile. Any opinions welcome.

Who did the re-skin? I understand that the vinyl needs to be heated and stretched prior to installation or you get the results that you mention. I would think that it would be worthwhile to take it back and see if the shop will correct it.

I had my top rebuilt last fall by Dan Petchel at Cars Inc. in New Jersey. He did a fantastic job, and if you have any Targa top questions, he is the man to talk to, very helpful. When he sent me my top back the top seemed a little loose, like what you are describing. He included instructions for what to do with the newly rebuilt top, and one of the things was to park it in the sun for a couple of warm afternoons. The heat will shrink the vinyl around the Targa frame. After a couple of days in the sun the loose material on my top snugged right up and it is a great fit now. Try this, and if it doesnt tighten up I would go back to whoever re-covered your top. A properly rebuilt/re-covered top should be a nice and tight fit.

Leaving it out in the sun is fine - If you don't live in not so sunny Ireland!

Thanks for the suggestions. On most sunny days, the top is of course tucked away behind the seats. I'll leave it on the car for a few days and see what happens.

If i understand the question, i spent about $530 total at Auto Tops and Interiors in Raleigh, NC. Ask for Tommy. They came highly recommended from the Porsche mechanics around town that I talked to. They had a few other Porsches in the shop at the same time as mine, as well as some classics.
