Tall driver with kids?

Tall driver with kids?
Considering an '84 Carrera. Will need to occasionally drive my 9 year old and 1 year old around town. With the driver's seat set to accomodate a 6'3" driver would there be enough room behind the seat for a child? Up to what age? (and yes I've read all the posts on child seats - seems like fixes exist).
Thanks - this is really the one hang-up I have which would otherwise lean me to an E36 M3.

I am 6'3 1/2" with a 10 y/o and a 7 y/o. I recently bought an 87 cab. No problems with them in the back. (You seem to have a good handle on the child seat issue). I have no problem with the seat height, though I prefer the sight with the top down when possible and rarely drive with it up.
I cannot say I have ever driven an 84 model, but I can add that the C-2 seemed to be a little tighter of headroom to me.
