Post two easy questions

Just curious, I live in arizona, When I am driveing my car it seems to run around 230 degrees or so in around town driving. Is this a fairly common temp to see? I believe the car has good oil pressure, It idles around 15psi and has around 60psi @ around 4000 rpm. it is a 3.2ltr Last but not least, I have heard horror stories of people over filling their oil. Is there any special time you need to check the oil? hot, cold, before startup, idling, etc? obviously my first porsche, and no owners manual. I guess that is actually 3 questions, lol. Again, all help and wisdom is always appreciated.

Your oil pressure when the motor is at operating temperature should run around 1-2 bar at idle and rise 1 bar per 1000 rpms. The guage may be near or at 5 bar at high rpms or cruising at freeway speeds.

Always check your oil level after the motor is warm, at idle and on a level surface. Let the car sit for at least 30 seconds at idle before pulling the dipstick. The oil level is at an optimum level when the reading is between the high and low marks on the dipstick.

Hopefully others can help answer the temp questions as I do not have a 3.2 motor (nor can I remember from when I had a 3.2).

Hope this helps,
Jay

If you do a search on this site using "oil temp" as the search words you will find many threads on this topic.

Also, on the Pelican list in their 911 Tech Articles section at www.pelicanparts.com/911/911tech_articles.htm you will find several articles on oil and oil cooler issues. Saves you the time of waiting for an answer and others from repeating whats already been hashed and re-hashed.

As a reference,I have a 1983-911SC with a aftermarket Mocal cooler with a fan,and when the temps are in the low 90s here in Florida, sitting in traffic with the AC on and the cooler fan running, the temp gauge reads about 210 degrees. It goes a little lowere when moving. The oil pressure you are seeing is about right.

That sounds like some standard #'s, My 3.2 is around 20-30 @ idle and low 100's psi @4,000rpm. After about 15-20 minutes of driving in SoCal I'm at or near 210 degrees, but that is with no A.C.

Sounds like you need a Bentley's manual and "101 projects for your Porsche" for the general maintenance and upgrades if you so decide on you new P-car. Search and you shall receive!
